Brick & Mortar Bookstores a Dying Breed ?
So could this be an irreversible trend for the future for brick and mortar bookstores? Will bookstores as we know them today become as obsolete as the dinosaur and record store? I don't think so, but I do predict a much different look for their future. I believe that we'll see most of the major players cut back their number of stores and head in the direction of boutique types of operations. Typically the super size bookstore averages approximately 24,000 square feet in size, with about 1,600 square feet dedicated to their coffee shop/café. I can envision a newer sleeker store containing somewhere in the neighborhood of 5,000 - 7,500 square feet with perhaps 750 sq. feet dedicated to a tightly run espresso area.
In my opinion, most book readers will never totally stop buying hard copies of books, but will become more selective with the books that they do purchase. So if you want to read a fluffy romantic novel, why not go for the Kindle

I really like the fact that Kindle is now so thin! I mean how easy is it to slide into a briefcase or handbag. Or for students there's no need to hoist all those heavy books around in a back pack anymore.
Because it is so light weight (about 8 ounces) anyone can hold one. I know several people who love to read but have severe arthritis in their hands and I'm sure it would be perfect for them.

I am talking about its use for children, the disabled and the aged just to start with.
For disabled people, for instance someone who has had a stroke, or has the use of only one arm, the Kindle e book reader could be a wonderful aid to them living a fuller life. Books are so heavy and they are difficult to balance.

Imagine being in a wheelchair and being able to take this tiny, lightweight device with you where ever you go!
One of the features I love the most, in the kindle is the ability to change the font size. I see this as being very helpful for those older readers, or readers with failing eyesight.
Kindle has 6 different font sizes that you can choose from which enables to reader to read large print if that's what they need.
What Do Purchasers Really Think of Kindle?
Here are a couple of comments from People who have bought the Kindle.1: I have been using my Kindle for about 6 weeks and I must say that it took me only a few hours to totally fall in love with it. I curl up in my lounge chair with some hot tea next to me and get lost in a world of reading. Kindles Paper Like Screen
Paper-like ScreenUtilizing a new high-resolution display technology called electronic paper, Kindle provides a crisp black-and-white screen that resembles the appearance and readability of printed paper.
The screen works using ink, just like books and newspapers, but displays the ink particles electronically.
It reflects light like ordinary paper and uses no backlighting, eliminating the glare associated with other electronic displays.
As a result, Kindle can be read as easily in bright sunlight as in your living room.
The screen never gets hot so you can comfortably read as long as you like.
See what others are saying about the Kindle screen:
James Patterson, author of You've Been Warned, "The screen is fabulous. You would expect that, with a screen, there would be a glare, it would be hard to read but it's not. There's no glare. It's not backlit, which is kind of magical. I think people are going to be very, very surprised and delighted. This is a lot easier to read than a lot of books are these days."
Michael Lewis, author of Moneyball, "I'm telling you, after five minutes I've ceased to think I'm looking at a screen. It's not like reading a computer screen. It's more like reading a piece of paper. I think it's actually clearer, easier on the eye than the printed word."
Neil Gaiman, author of Stardust, "It's like paper and it's very interesting. It's very, very crisp. Very functional. Very readable."

Kindle Reader Tips
As with most screen displays, your Kindle screen can suffer from image burn from static text. This can occur if you leave the same page up for any length of time, but there is a way to protect your screen. You can't use a screensaver (yet), but if you refresh the screen (every 20 minutes or so) by clicking Alt+G then you can resolve the problem.
2. Kindle Shortcuts
The Kindle offers you a number of shortcuts. Here are some of the more useful:
Alt+T displays the current time.
Alt+P will play MP3 files you have stored on an SD card.
Alt+ F will go to the next MP3 on the list.
Alt+SHIFT+R will reset your Kindle. Use this soft reset if your Kindle freezes when in use.
Alt+B will bookmark the page you are on.
Alt+SHIFT+G will take a screenshot of the page you are on.
Alt+H will move the cursor one space right when typing.
Alt+J will do the same to the left.
Alt+Backspace will clear all text.
3. Utilizing the Read to Me Feature
The read-to-me feature is a text to speech option that enables the Kindle to work a bit like an audio book. I sometimes use this feature while on a long drive... well, at least it's better than reading and driving. I've also used it late at night when my eyes start tiring, but the darn soothing voice put me to sleep. The speech is computer generated, similar to ordinary PC equivalents using a word library, so it doesn't flow quite the same as an audio book, but it's still pretty good nevertheless. The tip here is that if you are holding the device when you are listening, such as if you are on a bus or are taking a walk, then if you accidentally press the menu button or the space bar, the reading will be stopped. This can be a nuisance, so in said situations it's a good idea to hold your Kindle upside down as you are less likely to hit these buttons. Even better, don't hold it! Keep it in a bag or a pocket.
4. To Find Your Location
Amazon's 3G CDMA module has a location capability that can be used in Google Maps:
Alt+1 - shows your currently location
Alt+2 - shows nearby gas stations
Alt+3 - shows nearby restaurants
Alt+5 - shows a custom keyword used nearby
5. Fast Forwarding
To fast reverse or forward through your book pages: press Alt and hold it down while pressing the Previous or Next keys.
6. Defragmenting your Kindle
This is something that you should do with some regularity if you use your Kindle alot. When you delete anything from your Kindle, it leaves a space in memory. When you load up a book it will use that space and some other spaces available until the whole file is uploaded. This means each of your books could be stored in small areas all over the memory. You can defrag the device by attaching it to your computer and running your computer defrag utility, pointing to the Kindle as the drive to defragment. This can ultimately have a remarkable effect on the speed of your Kindle.
7. Newspaper Subscriptions
Many people use their Kindle with a newspaper subscription, but some papers are better suited than others for the Kindle. It only makes sense to try a trial copy first. You can typically get a trial copy on the cheap. So you might wish to consider this option before signing up for a full subscription.
8. Saving the Battery with 3G
The Kindle battery life is good, but if you use 3G connectivity then your battery will run down quickly. The only way to turn 3G off is in the settings - so make sure that if you are not using it for a while, go to Settings and turn 3G off. Even when you are not using it, it will still drain your battery unless you do this. Plus it is also highly reccommended to turn off Wi-Fi when your signal is bad.
So keep on reading dear Kindle user (and potential Kindle users) and remember - "The more that you read, the taller you'll grow."
