The Wii is the fifth home video game console released by Nintendo. The console is the direct successor to the Nintendo GameCube. Nintendo states that its console targets a broader demographic than that of Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3, but it competes with both as part of the seventh generation of gaming systems.
A distinguishing feature of the console is its wireless controller, the Wii Remote, which can be used as a handheld pointing device and can detect acceleration in three dimensions. Another is WiiConnect24, which enables it to receive messages and updates over the Internet while in standby mode.
Nintendo first spoke of the console at the 2004 E3 press conference and later unveiled the system at the 2005 E3. Satoru Iwata revealed a prototype of the controller at the September 2005 Tokyo Game Show. At E3 2006, the console won the first of several awards. By December 8, 2006, it had completed its launch in four key markets. During the week of September 12, 2007, the Financial Times declared that the Wii was the current sales leader of its generation. Fetching new data from eBay now... please stand byFirst off, thanks to vgmusic.com for music. Next, let me give some context... I live in a pretty small town, so that's why the time I said I would wait outside of Gamestop is so late. I kinda bumped the time up for my real arrival by several hours now. Also, stay tuned afterwards for the bloopers. Don't miss the only good part of the movie! And finally, I'll be uploading a follow up movie to this within a couple days. Sorry for this coming out a day early, I couldn't stand it anymore! And without further chatting, enjoy!

Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime wants you to get a Wii. And while he can't guarantee you'll have one under your tree some Christmas, he has a plan to get you one soon. Maybe. In a conference call this morning, Reggie told IGN that retailers will be getting large stock of Wiis this Sunday morning. And if you can't get one of those, you can get a raincheck...[read the Mlive.com article]
Tri Cities Washington - To deal with frustration among holiday shoppers hunting for its Wii game console, Nintendo Co. and retailer GameStop Corp. are launching a rain check program. "We expect this to be a great way for consumers who desperately want a Wii to have something to put under the tree," Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said Friday. The rain checks will be available at the regular Wii system price, $249.99, on Dec. 20 and 21, and will entitle buyers to get the Nintendo console before Jan. 29. Fils-Aime said "many tens of thousands of rain checks" would be available...[read the Tri City Herald article] Q: Our son wants a video game console for Christmas. He has his heart set on a Nintendo Wii, but we haven't been able to find one - every store we try is sold out. Is there any way to lay our hands on a Wii?
A: The Wii, which lets users play games by moving the remote control like a bat, a golf club or a sword, is the most sought-after electronics device for the second straight holiday season. Nintendo claims its manufacturers are cranking out nearly 2 million Wiis per month, but in this country, demand is far outstripping supply. You could pay $400 or more on eBay for a Wii (which retails for $250), but that's an act of desperation. A better strategy is to call the stores in your area that carry video game equipment and ask them when the next shipment of Wiis is due. Then get someone to the store before it opens on delivery day and hope for the best. You may have better luck at bigger stores such as Best Buy and Circuit City, which generally get larger shipments. Small stores might receive only one or two units at a time...[read the San Francisco Chronicle article]
Now, rehabilitation hospitals are using Nintendo's Wii video game console to help patients gain back body strength. According to Robbie Winget, an occupational therapist at Dodd Hall Rehabilitation Hospital in Columbus, the gaming console helps patients to build balance, coordination, endurance, and upper and lower body strength...[read the Techtree.com article]
Julia Miller was standing in line at Zellers at 5 a.m. hoping to get her hands on a Nintendo Wii. And Julia, 19, doesn't even have children. The Wii was actually for her boss, Donna Morand, owner of Innovations Hair Studio & Spa in Carp, whose daughter asked for one for Christmas. After she got the wish list, Ms. Morand joined legions of parents and grandparents, husbands and wives, looking for the coveted console this Christmas. It is a bit of déjà vu. Last year's entry in the elusive gift treasure hunt was also the Wii. Funny thing is, they were on store shelves this summer and fall. It's only now that they've become hard to find, say staffers at area stores. "We're sold out all the time," said Calum Walsh, of EB Games in the Rideau Centre. "It's the pop music of video games."...[read the Canada.com article] WII consoles bundled with games are selling on internet auction site eBay for more than £1,000 following a shortage of supplies. The consoles are also the most searched-for items on the site.
The manufacturer, games giant Nintendo, last month warned it could struggle to get enough stock into stores due to high global demand. And last week, eBay logged nearly 30,000 searches for the words "Wii" and "Nintendo Wii" on its UK website. That compared with 11,054 for the rival Xbox 360 console and 10,855 for the PlayStation 3...[read the Scotsman.com Business article]
File this one under the "could be completely made up" category, but this week's issue of Famitsu apparently contains the news that Nintendo will drop a host of new Wii color schemes in Japan in January. Apparently Wiis in red, black, blue, pink, and a limited edition retro Famicom-colored Wii will be made available in Japan on January 24, the day that Super Smash Bros. Brawl drops...[read the Wired article]
Nintendo will later today launch a new feature on the Wii that will make gift giving this holiday season a little more convenient. A new Gifting function will allow users with Wii to send Virtual Console games to those with whom they have traded Friend Codes.
Virtual Console games are purchased from the Wii Shop Channel at a starting price of 500 Wii Points ($5). Classic NES titles typically start at 500 points, SNES games at 800 and N64 at 1000. Virtual Console games from other classic systems such as the Sega Genesis, TurboGrafx-16, MSX and Neo Geo are also available...[read the DailyTech article]
