Quinoa - This Tiny Seed Is A Nutrition Dynamo

It seems like everyone is talking about quinoa (KEEN-wah) these days. A tiny seed from South America, quinoa was largely ignored by the rest of the world for centuries. Quinoa was scorned as a food for peasants until modern science revealed how much nutrition this tiny seed contains. Quinoa is now the hottest trend in healthy eating.

Quinoa is so popular because it's protein is "complete." This means it has all the amino acids your body needs, even the lysine that is missing from wheat and rice. Quinoa is also much higher in protein and fiber than most grains. Quinoa is naturally gluten free. And finally, many quinoa producers grow quinoa to organic standards.

Of course, those are all good reasons for trying quinoa, but many find once they try it that they will be eating quinoa regularly because they like the taste and texture and they love the way it makes them feel.

Finding Quinoa in the Store

Where is it?

bulk quinoaOnce you know where to buy quinoa, you still have to find it in the store.

It can be tricky to find quinoa in your grocery store because many stores do not stock it in the same place. Asking for help often results in a blank stare or a dispute over the proper pronunciation of "quinoa." You can ask at the service desk, but where's the fun in that?

When looking for quinoa in a new store, start by looking in the following aisles:

1. If your grocer sells bulk grains and beans, check the bulk aisle. Quinoa is usually one of the options.

2. Check the rice aisle. Many stores stock quinoa next to rice with couscous and bulgur wheat.

3. Check the special diets aisle. Because quinoa is gluten free, many stores stock quinoa with other gluten free food.

4. Check the cereal and baking aisles. Some stores stock quinoa with flours and cereals.

5. Check the ethnic aisle. Many ethnic brands are packaging quinoa under their brand name and some stores stock this quinoa with the other products by that brand rather than in the other aisles of the store.

Wherever you find it, quinoa is worth the effort.
