The first question you'll want to ask yourself is which model of SodaStream to buy. To give you a breakdown here are the four models that SodaStream offers:

Fountain Jet - This is the introductory model and is the original SodaStream soda maker. This model starts off around 100 bucks and features all of the basic carbonating abilities. It also has the capacity to use both the 14.5 and 33 oz carbonators so if you plan on making a whole lot of carbonated beverages, the 33 oz carbonator is more convenient. This model also features a 1 liter PET bottle which means that it is BPA-free and it's also better at holding the carbonation for much longer, preventing the flat beverage syndrome. This model comes in 4 different colors schemes and is lightweight so it's perfect for those on the go (such as RVers)
Genesis - The Genesis is the next model up and has several design improvements. To start with it uses an open design that makes it much easier to get the bottle threaded onto the carbonator. The enclosed design of the Fountain Jet can be tricky at times, so the couple of extra bucks will save you the headache later. It also has a variety of fun colors to choose from that will compliment just about any kitchen décor.
Pure - The SodaStream pure is a fantastic model that also makes use of the open bottle design, but the Pure is made from a nice stainless steel and plastic construction. This makes it a little more robust, but more importantly the designs are more modern and match the stainless steel appliance look.
Penguin - Then there is the Penguin. This is the latest model of SodaStream soda makers and combines the best of form and function. The Penguin is a charming design that actually looks like a stainless steel penguin. But what really makes it worth the money is that it has an improved design that eliminates the need to screw in the bottle at all. It features a self-centering design that allows you to take the GLASS (not even PET) bottle and load it into the bottom and simply close up the unit and hit the go button. It also features a carbonation adjustment that allows you to control how much fizz you get so if you can have it foaming over or simply a light fizz.

The SodaStream has exploded in popularity and therefore it's becoming much more ubiquitous; you can find them at just about any home type store (Bed Bath & Beyond, William Sonoma, etc.). But to save money you want to get the best price. From what I've found the online stores do a better job at selling cheap SodaStream soda makers. In particular, Amazon has some of the lowest prices. They also offer starter kits which is definitely the best way to go if you're giving it as a gift.
