We always hear cowboy enthusiasts talk about how important it is for boot owners to take care of their cowboy boots. After all, you have invested not only money in it, but also time and efforts in finding the perfect pair.
The main aspect of proper care for boots involves cleaning. But aside from this, another important aspect you should never miss is waterproofing your boots. Waterproofing your favorite pair of cowboy boots is important for two reasons: to maintain the quality of the footwear and to keep your feet dry and comfortable even during snow and rain.

Need for Waterproofing

If you fail to waterproof your boots, the leather material can either harden or crack in time. You certainly do not want the material of your precious boots to be damaged just because they were exposed to water.

Aside from this, you know you cannot avoid the rain or snow altogether, and you need to get out to do important things despite the lousy weather. Wearing waterproofed boots can help ensure that your feet will not get soaked even in this kind of weather.

Most leather boots, especially those that come from superior quality brands like John Deere boots and Twisted X boots already come with waterproofing features. However, in time you would still need to waterproof these boots to ensure that their top condition is retained.

Learning how to waterproof your boots is as easy as following these basic steps.

Prepare the Boots

First, you have to prepare the leather boots for waterproofing. Clean the surface using a damp cloth to remove all loose dust and dirt including those in the seams and folds. You can also use a cleaning spray-on product and wipe this with a clean cloth to prepare your boots for the process. Remember, your boots should be completely clean before waterproofing.

Apply the Waterproofing Solution

Use a different clean cloth or clean brush to apply gel, wax or cream waterproofing solution on the surface of the boots thoroughly and evenly. See to it that all exposed areas are coated well and are absorbing the solution equally. If you have a spray-on waterproofing product, hold the spray at least a half foot away from the boots and spray on the solution in even strokes. Do the waterproofing in a well-ventilated area.

Wipe off and Allow to Dry

If there is any excess gel, wax, cream, or spray-on solution, wipe it away with a clean cloth. Even out any drips and rub down unevenly coated areas.

Allow the boots to dry completely before using. Ideally, you should let it stand overnight so it would be able to absorb the waterproofing solution thoroughly. Check if the surface has been coated evenly. Examine the folds and seams as well.
Caring for your boots is a responsibility that you should never neglect. After all, these boots would work well in protecting your feet against external factors. It is just right that you care and maintain them the right way as well.
