Why Should You Take Vitamin D Anyway?
One of the key factors explaining today's high rates of chronic disease, besides poor diet and sedentary lifestyle, is an epidemic of vitamin D deficiency. It is estimated that 85 percent of Americans have insufficient levels of vitamin D!
It was once sort of relegated to the trash heap of vitamins as far as its importance, but new research shows that it is critical to the body's immune system and not having enough of it is the underlying cause of many modern maladies. So like many ideas in science, the pendulum is swinging back the other way, and all the new research shows that Vitamin D is absolutely essential for life and most of us don't get enough.
Lots of things have contributed to this state of affairs but one one of the main ones has been the emphasis on sunlight as a source of skin cancer which has driven many people indoors. In addition, modern civilization has given birth to the phenomenon of video, computers, the marriage of video and computers, and lots of indoor games. All of this has led to people spending more and more time indoors and less time in the sun. Also, with the false scares of the sun being a carcinogen, people have slathered on skin protection (ironically, containing carcinogenic ingredients themselves) in the form of sun tan lotions and kept any sun from penetrating when they are outdoors. All of this has led to an epidemic of people who don't have enough Vitamin D.
Vitamin D is essential for immune support, and it is also promotes calcium absorption in the gut, plus reduction of inflammation and the reduction of osteoporosis. It is essential for bone growth! Double blind studies now also show that it helps in depression.
So all this time when you were told to stay out of the sun, it was wrong information! Get some sun. You need it. And it feels good to your body and soul. But if you don't get enough, take a supplement. I have many different types of Vitamin D in my Vitamania store. Please visit for all your supplements, vitamins, and herbs.

Although I am a Certified Herbalist, I'm not a doctor . I'm a researcher who was thrust into the role of Health protector when my son's medical treatment was not working. Vitamin D and the Autism Connection
Studies support the link between vitamin D and autism. For example, researchers at Cornell found that children in rainier -- and therefore more overcast -- counties in Oregon, Washington, and California are twice as likely to be diagnosed with autism than their counterparts in sunnier areas of those same states.
In light of strong medical evidence supporting a link between insufficient vitamin D and autism, it seems wise that vitamin D levels for pregnant women, infants, and young children be monitored carefully, and supplemented if needed.
Some health experts recommend that ideally, one should maintain vitamin D levels equal to those of individuals living in sun-rich environments -- that's about 50 to 80 ng/mL. The proper initial dosages for daily vitamin D supplements are . . .
==> 2,000 IU for pregnant women
==> 800 IU for breast-feeding infants
==> 400 IU for formula-feeding infants
==> 1,000 to 2,000 IU for toddlers and young children
