Zeolite has many uses in today's products

You read a lot about people taking zeolite as a supplement but did you know it has many other uses? You will find it in laundry soap, oxygen concentrators, potting mix, medicines and heat pumps. It has several medicinal applications and is used in the treatment of severe bleeding, diabetes, and Lyme Disease. Elderly patients with oxygen needs use it in oxygen concentrators as a safer way to provide oxygen without an oxygen tank. Zeolite is now used in the formulation of concrete to reduce chloride permeability and improve workability. It is now being used in environmentally friendly heat pumps for remote applications.

Beer Keg Cooler

Use this cool keg for home brewingThis is a commercial example of using the Zeolite/water-vacuum cycle to produce a cold liquid. The keg cooler is produced by Cool-System KEG GmbH. You simply twist the valve and the keg cools 5 gallons of beer to the optimum temperature of 41F in one hour without any external power. What's more, the keg maintains this temperature for a full twelve hours. These containers are reusable by heating up the zeolite to reverse the cooling process then they are cleaned and refilled for use again.

Seems like a good keg to be used for homebrewers which never have a refrigerator large enough to cool their home brew. However, there are several other uses for these cooling containers besides just cooling your beer. The company has developed one for keeping milk cool overnight in countries where they don't have access to electricity. Another use for this technology would be to provide cold drinks for camping or boondocking where no source of ice is available and electricity must be conserved. Check with the company for purchase information.

Zeolite Ice Makers

Zeolite Solar ice maker process

The more generic form of this solar heat pumping process is used to produce ice. Ice that can be used to cool your drinks, keep your food cold, provide storage for vaccines, or even cool your home in areas where electricity isn't available. Many off grid applications exist for solar ice makers using the zeolite/water-vacuum process. A reservoir of water in an evacuated chamber is used to make the ice. This water reservoir is connected by a tube to another chamber containing Zeolite. Since this tube is also evacuated it contains water vapor. The chilling process is started by opening a valve so the water vapor flows to the Zeolite where it will be absorbed. As this happens, the Zeolite warms up, absorbing heat from the water reservoir as it does so. The reaction is sufficiently intense to cool the water in the reservoir enough so that it freezes. For each square meter of solar collecting area, these ice makers can generate over 10 lbs of ice. I am working on a homemade one to generate ice for my green RV living boondocking trips.

Zeolite for your aquarium

Zeolite is an effective ammonia filter when used in aquariums, but must be used with some care, especially with delicate tropical corals that are sensitive to water chemistry and temperature. Look for the special zeolite packaged just for this application. If you have a cat, you may already know about zeolite based cat litter. The benefit of zeolite in cat litter is increased absorption of liquid and ammonia odors. That cat litter may not be working as well as you like without some added zeolite.

Gardening

Zeolite for gardeningWhen zeolite is used in gardening, it provides a source of slowly released potassium. If the zeolite is previously loaded with ammonium, it can serve a similar function in the slow release of nitrogen. Zeolites can also act as water moderators, in which they will adsorb up to 55% of their weight in water and slowly release it under plant demand. This property can prevent root rot and moderate drought cycles providing for lower fertilizer costs and healthier plants. A perfect addition for your patio container plants.

Zeolite has many uses

Zeolite comes in many different forms and it is being used in many commercial products today. If you are only using it as a health supplement, try some of these other ways to benefit from it. In the future, we will see many other products like the solar ice makers and chilled liquid containers. How many uses does it have in your life today?

How many products do you have that use zeolite?

Ice is one of simplest recipes you can ever make. To prepare it, you only need time. However, if you are in a restaurant business, time is not something you have. You need more ice at the quickest possible time. It is for this reason that a commercial ice machine has become very convenient.
