It is a proven fact that most people buy a car by the time they visit thier 3-5th lot even if they don't get the best deal. This happens because they are tired and just want a car. If you do your homework you should only have to make 1 trip to your local car dealer.

In almost every car deal that I participate in I have to overcome some sort of an objection. The two most common objections deal with the monies involved. They are "My car is worth more than your giving me on trade" and "Your asking too much for yours".

This isn't a big surprise howeever, I use to have those same objections, until I joined the automotive industry as a SALESMAN. Now I have a different opinion. Being armed with new knowledge about the process it is fair to say there is common ground for the customer and dealership to agree on.

The biggest factors in determing trade in and retail values are as follows:
-What condition is the exterior of both
-Are the interiors clean
-Are there and squeaky belts, or mechanical problems
-How are the tires
-How does it drive
-How many miles
-Market value

The simple fact is, most customers expect a dealership to give retail for the Trade-In and then sell the new or used car at wholesale prices. A formula that spells disaster.

The little "Black Book" that dealerships use to appraise the vehicle being traded are reference points compiled from dealer only auctions for a certain geographical area on a weekly basis. Simply put what could the dealer buy that same car for last week at the auction.

The price for the car you are buying is also determined by the market. Kelly Blue Book is a great resource. The values placed on selling used cars are compiled from data received from dealerships in those same geographical areas. Thats right, you the customer are paying a price which has been determined by your peers.

Now, why should there be so much difference between the two values? Thats simple really there are expenses that must be paid. Here are some examples:
- The salaries of usually 3-5 administrators
- The salaries of the managers (general, new, used and finance)
- The salaries of the porter who probably work harder for less money than anyone else
- Building and grounds maintenance
- The salespersons commision which can be as low as $75.00 if the deal had no gross profit
- Finally whats left over (when there is) goes to the owner of the dealership

Finally, in closing the customer should use the resources available to them. The internet is probably the best. A customer armed with the information that can be found on the internet will usually get the best deal which allows the buyer and seller both feel like winners. And thats what it's all about WINNING.
