Buy a push mower: My favorite reel mowers

Ranked #24,981 in Home & Garden, #432,598 overall

Top list from a manual mower enthusiast

I have many fond memories of cutting my grandparent's grass, when I was barely tall enough to reach the handle of their push reel mower. The vivid initiation of pulling splinters from my palms still lingers.

But I eventually adapted to the sting of tweezers, and that frayed wooden handle turned my mittens to blisters and calluses by the end of my first season zig-zagging around the family property. I relished in my accomplishment when I was done and was rewarded with lemon-aid.

To this day, I don't mind cutting grass. Looking back, I've realized the reward and enjoyment was the time to myself: an hour or two alone with my thoughts, exercising and meditating, going with the grain of nature, and turning my yard into a piece of art.

Scotts 2000-20 20-Inch Classic Push Reel Lawn Mower

Just last year my gas powered mower at my house and the one at my rental property saw their last days.

Much to my dismay, a wooden push reel was nowhere to be found, so I purchased my first modern day Scott's push reel. It was a Scotts 2000-20 20-Inch Classic Push Reel Lawn Mower.

I went home the same day and mowed my yard and then my rental property. I was about to start on my neighbors, but I realized it wasn't my place to say how high someone's grass should be. The article was right: The quality of cutting was unmatched.

A few weekends had passed before I found myself in another hardware store talking push reel mowers with another nice sales person.

This time I was in the market for another push wheel my tenants could use.
The sales kid was adamant on promoting a particular cutter that eventually caught my eye.

What a name, I thought. I was drawn in by its bright green and orange color. You don't need to sharpen the blades, he said. I convinced him to let me take it for a "test drive," which they very rarely do anymore, but I was persistent and the poor guy just wanted to go to lunch.

So, I was on my way to take it for a spin and introduce Brill to my tenants. But I realized right away Brill was staying with me.

There are so many good ones out there. The next one I plan to purchase is the American Lawn Mower Company 1815-18.
