Black Snake Moan is a 2007 film released on March 2. It was written and directed by Craig Brewer (of Hustle & Flow fame), was filmed in Memphis, Tennessee, and stars Samuel L. Jackson, and Christina Ricci.

The title of the film derives from the 1927 Blind Lemon Jefferson song, while the plot is loosely based on George Eliot's 1861 novel Silas Marner, which also features a religious social outcast recovering from romantic betrayal by setting a young girl straight. In Silas Marner, Eppie is tied to Silas's house with a length of cloth for purposes similar to the iconic chain in Black Snake Moan.

Rae is a sex-addicted young woman. She is distressed by the departure for duty of Ronnie, her boyfriend who is a soldier. She gets hurt after being beaten and thrown out of the car by Gill. Lazarus finds her lying on the road, scantily dressed. He nurses her, but keeps her from leaving the house by putting her on a long heavy chain. Rae is willing to have sex with him but he refuses. While Lazarus is in town, Rae has sex with virgin teenage delivery boy Lincoln. When Lazarus comes home he chases him off.

Rae starts to feel better and appreciate Lazarus' care. He removes the chain. They go into town together for shopping, people are surprised to see them together. Ronnie returns, discharged because of an anxiety disorder. Rae and Ronnie get married.
