How to buy diamonds without getting cheated.

When you walk into the jewelry store to buy a diamond, the salesmen are there to make the sale.

Ask them for advice and they'd tell you to pick the one that calls out to you or other fanciful rubbish like that. Chances are they'd guide you to the most expensive diamonds you might be willing to buy so that they can get the largest commission.

How do you know you are getting a good deal? How much is that diamond really worth?

Is it a real diamond or an imitation? For starters, get yours from a reputable jeweller. The one in this photo, though it looks like a genuine 3 stone diamond ring, is actually costume jewelry. Imitations look very realistic these days, so the reputation of the store you buy it from is all-important.

The 4 Cs

Before you buy a diamond, check out the 4 Cs . Carat, Color, Clarity and Cut

Diamonds are priced on their rarity. The rare, flawless, large, colorless diamonds cut perfectly are worth far more than a badly cut diamond with lots of flaws and a brown tint.

Carat refers to how heavy the diamond is, or the size of the diamond. The larger the diamond, the more valuable it is.

Clarity is how perfect that diamond is. The clearer the diamond, the fewer flaws it has, the more valuable it will be.

Color refers to how colorless the diamond is, or how strong the color. Rarity is important. Both ends of the spectrum are the most valuable. The colorless diamonds and those with the strongest colors (canary diamonds, blue diamonds and pink diamonds for example) are worth the most. Also take note if the diamonds was treated to make it colorless or to develop a strong color.

Cut refers to how well the diamond is cut to reflect light. It does not refer to the shape of the diamond. Every shape has its perfect proportions to reflect the most light. The once that are cut most perfectly are the most valuable, so the skill of the diamond cutter is paramount.

When the diamond is loose it can be evaluated by yourself or a qualified independent diamond appraiser using the latest diamond evaluation and grading tools. The diamond can be inspected from every single angle to make certain that it is indeed of the quality and beauty that you desire. This is something that cannot be done with the same degree of effectiveness once the diamond has been set in a ring.

Diamond Rings

How To Choose A Diamond Engagement Ring

Diamonds rings are traditional engagement rings. When a guy proposes, down on one knee, he would place a diamond ring on the finger of his beloved as he proposes marriage to her.

Now what should the ring be like?

How do you choose a diamond ring she would love but would stay within your budget?

What is important to her? If looks matter, would she prefer a larger diamond of a lower clarity to a tiny diamond of a higher clarity.

If she is a perfectionist, get her a perfect diamond in terms of clarity, cut and color but go for a small one to stay within your budget.

A 1 carat diamond can cost anything from $1,700 to $17,000, depending on the color, clarity and cut of the diamond so play around with the 4 Cs to maximize your investment.

Next, choose a setting that pleases her. If she is allergic to nickle and if even gold jewelry gives her a jewelry rash, go for a platinum setting, the purest of metals.

Does she like something simple? A plain setting that shows off a single diamond would be perfect?

Does she prefer something more elaborate? A setting studded with diamonds with a huge rock in the center should impress her.
