House Music - Many Flavors of Groove
Yes, house music comes in many flavors ranging from acid house, hard house, and happy house to electro house, deep house, and tech house. This lens will attempt to help you focus in on which house is your house.
House Music
House music was born in Chicago, Illinois in the early 1980's and has arguably become the most popular style of electronic dance music in America. It has since spread around the world and become a staple in nightclubs from New York and London to San Francisco and Miami which have all developed their own styles within the genre.
House music is generally categorized as such because of its "four on the floor" rhythm structure of the kick drum, syncopated hi-hats, and upbeat tempos. Some claim that House got its name from the legendary club "The Warehouse" in Chicago. Others attribute it to the fact that most House music is written in someone's house.
The sounds of house music have been almost exclusively created on Roland musical equipment such as the TR-909 and TR-808 drum machines and the beloved TB-303 synthesizer which defines the sound of Acid House music. The tempos of House music usually range from 124 BPM to 135 BPM and average at around 130. Some styles such as Hard House and NRG go even faster (and harder).
Much of House music is jazzy and soulful with powerful vocal tracks and is known as Deep House or Vocal House. This style has its early roots in the disco sound pioneered by Giorgio Moroder. Other styles of House music explore more electronic sounds like Acid House, Tech House, and Electro House.
