Some thoughts on cheap books and the choices we make

We, in the United States, live in a world of choices, a world where we can choose everything, ranging from a potentially limitless choice of bottled water brands, to the endless variety of morning coffee at our favorite coffee shop.  The choices we make are supposedly rational, and in our best interest, but the reality is that we often choose against our interest, choosing the more costly of two identical items, for no reason.  A perfect example of this is buying books online.  In this example many choose to pay more for books rather than to use a book price comparison site to find cheap books.

Before the internet we were confined to buying books at local bookstores, and if we needed a cheap book all we could do was to look for a used edition at the university bookstore, but now, with the internet, and with the increased transparency it allows us we have many more options!

As a consumer and an avid book buyer myself it is often hard for me to comprehend why we make such choices, after all, I know that if I am given two identical items at different prices that I will always choose the cheaper item, and I also know that I like transparency, and I enjoy knowing that I am getting the best deal.  It is for this reason that I am a fan of We Compare Books.  This site lets you compare prices on any book at over two dozen of the web's largest bookstores, and they always give you the best book price!

We Compare Books vs. Amazon

In my ongoing attempt to try to spread the word about We Compare Books, I talk to many people on a daily basis. I tend to start conversations on trains, buses, planes. I am even that guy who will talk to people in line with me at the supermarket. Throughout all of these encounters I have gotten many responses, most positive, but the one consistent response, the one that comes up over and over again is, "I just buy my books at Amazon, I trust they have the best prices and have been using them for years, why should I go anywhere else".
This is a very valid response, and one that I overall agree with. I am a big fan of Amazon as well and in fact purchased all of my textbooks via Amazon my freshman year. Even today I purchase many books through Amazon, but only when they are the cheapest. Sometimes Amazon is the cheapest, sometimes it is not. The difference between going directly to Amazon to purchase a book, as opposed to comparing prices is that at Amazon you only get to search a single bookstore, - many sellers yes, but a single store nonetheless - whereas by going to We Compare Books you get to simultaneously search many bookstores with a single click. So, this means that instead of being able to get the lowest price on Amazon only, this enables you to find the lowest possible price on the Web. Therefore, although there are times when Amazon is your best option, you should always try to find the best price, and the best way to find cheap books is still to use a price comparison engine.

Are bookstores cheaper or can I find cheaper books online?

A case study of book prices

...Here's a little experiment I did. I went on to my alma mater's website and did a course search of a typical 15-credit semester course load in my major, International Relations. After compiling the listed prices for the books from the school bookstore, I then did a search for the books on We Compare Books to find the lowest price. I even included the estimated shipping costs. You can do the search yourself to verify.
Essentials of International Relations by Karen A. Mingst
ISBN: 0393928977
- Bookstore price: $61.50
- WCB lowest price (plus shipping): $33.99
Understanding International Conflicts by Joseph Nye
ISBN: 0321472012
- Bookstore price: $61.75
- WCB lowest price (plus shipping): $47.23
¡Dímelo Tú! by Francisco Rodriguez
ISBN: 1413031609
- Bookstore price: $211.00
- WCB lowest price (plus shipping): $39.00
Western Civilizations by Judith G. Coffin
ISBN: 9780393926996
- Bookstore price: $90.25
- WCB lowest price (plus shipping): $4.24
A Pocket Guide to Writing in History by Mary Lynn Rampolla
ISBN: 9780312247669
- Bookstore price: $20.50
- WCB lowest price (plus shipping): $4.24
World Religions: A Historical Approach by Solomon A. Nigosian
ISBN: 9780312442378
- Bookstore price: $48.00
- WCB lowest price (plus shipping): $24.00
Total bookstore price: $493.00
Total WCB price: $152.70
In this instance, you would save $340.30 or 69%! This proves that if you really want to save money on your next book purchase, use We Compare Books. Please take note, though, that prices change on a daily basis and that the prices you get may vary slightly.
