Where to Buy Green, Non-Toxic, Sustainable Carpeting
Are you in the market for carpeting that is non-toxic and sustainable? Are you looking for a place to recycle your old carpeting?
On this page, I will share my research into finding the best green, eco-friendly carpeting, and show you ways to recycle your old carpets.
We will discuss the cradle to cradle design process and the advantages of using carpet tiles. You will see some carpet companies that are doing things differently.
Note: I have no connection with any of these companies. This is what I found in my research.

Why buy green carpeting?
* to reduce exposure to VOC's (volatile organic compounds)
* to protect earth's resources, and
* to reduce waste
Questions to Ask
about a potential carpet purchase
I found this website - Green.FindAnyFloor.Com - that outlines the questions you should ask before purchasing any carpet. Key areas include:
* What is the carpet made of? - Look for recycled content or renewable resources.
* What chemicals are in the carpet? - Look for the Green Label Plus certification, which has limits on VOC's (volatile organic compounds).
* How much energy was used to make the carpet? - Where was the carpet manufactured? Were non-renewable resources used? i.e. petroleum-based content.
* What is the lifetime of the carpet and is it recyclable? The longer the lifetime, the less energy is used and waste produced.
* What adhesives are used? - Look for the Green Label Plus certification that limits VOC's (volatile organic compounds) in adhesives.
Alternative Fibers

In the past, we would have carpeting installed that had that "new carpet smell", most likely emitting VOC's (volatile organic compounds). When the carpeting was worn out, we would have it pulled up, throw it in the landfill and start all over again.
Most carpets are made from OIL! Nylon, polypropylene, and polyester are all petroleum-based fibers.
Alternative fibers include recycled nylon, recycled P.E.T. polyester (made from recycled plastic bottles), or renewable resources such as sugar derived from corn.

What is the Geen Label Plus Designation?
An Independent Testing Program
For Carpet:* Tests for emissions of VOCs (volatile organic compounds), specifically seven chemicals. To learn more about the health effects of VOC's, visit this link: Aerias: Air Quality Sciences - Carpets.
For Carpet Adhesive:
* Tests for emission levels for 15 chemicals.
To maintain Green Label Plus certifications, carpet and adhesives must undergo initial, quarterly, and annual testing. Green Label Plus products may contribute to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification.

Did You Know?
45% of the world's carpet is produced in the United States.
80% of the carpet produced in the United States is made within a 65-mile radius of Dalton, Georgia, known as the "Carpet Capital of the World."

Cradle to Cradle Design in Carpeting
Recycling Carpet
What is cradle to cradle design? This term was coined by William McDonough and Dr. Michael Braungart and outlined in their book Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things. It is based on the concept that WASTE = FOOD, that is, all waste should be food for something new, just as nature operates. So, with cradle to cradle carpeting, old carpeting would be used to create new carpeting or other products.
Here is an interesting article about European carpet manufacturer, Desso, the first to adopt cradle to cradle design. Desso and the Cradle to Cradle Vision

Green Carpet Manufacturers
InterfaceFLOR
Specialists in Modular Carpet Tiles

InterfaceFLOR has been producing environmentally-friendly carpet tiles since the 1970's. CEO Ray Anderson has helped to dramatically change this industry. With carpet tiles, you can just replace worn tiles, not the whole carpet.
Over the years they have gradually developed manufacturing processes which reduce waste and eliminate toxins from their products and facilities. Their Mission Zero promise is to completely eliminate any negative impact on the environment by 2020.

Shaw Flooring
and their Green Edge Initiative
Shaw's carpet made from Anso Nylon 6 features post-consumer recycled content, and it can be recycled. Shaw has its own recycling facility, Evergreen, in Augusta, Georgia. The Evergreen facility converts Nylon 6 carpet back to its original material, basically carpet to carpet recycling.
Through partnerships with other recycling companies, Shaw collects post-consumer carpets from throughout the United States. Their commitment to sustainability extends beyond recycling. They have a waste to energy facility and have cut water use 45% since 1999.
See their green carpet products here.

Mohawk Greenworks

Mohawk GreenWork's mission is to be a leader in the area of sustainability and environmental responsibility for the flooring industry. They are constantly looking for ways to reduce their environmental footprint. They are doing this by:
* Recycling carpet and carpet samples through their GreenWorks Center.
* Reducing number of carpet samples through digital applications and recycling
* Reducing pollution and water use in the manufacturing process
* Reducing waste through recovery methods for backing, yarn, shrink wrap, cardboard, and pallets
* Reducing emissions of phosphorous and other greenhouse gases
Their ReCover program helps consumers dispose of their old carpet. Just call 877-3RE-CYCL (877-373-2925) to get the job rolling. You'll receive a quote for the removal within 24-48 hours.
Mohawk's Carpet Brand
Karastan
Mohawk GreenWorks website was very beautiful and explained their sustainability initiatives very well. However, finding carpet was not so easy. From what I figured out, their carpeting brand is Karastan, which takes you to a different site. The "green" types of Karastan carpet include:
* New Zealand Wool - definitely renewable but not so environmentally friendly for me since it comes from half way around the world.
* SmartStrand - a new generation of carpet fibers made from corn-based polymers, a renewable resource; uses 30% less energy to produce; CRI Green Label Plus certified for low emissions.
Search by color, texture, and fiber (choose SmartStrand) and then find a retailer near you. Karastan Carpets
A Commerical Provider - Tandus Flooring
Green Carpet and Eco-Friendly Manufacturing by doloinc
I really appreciated the comment from doloinc at the end of this page. He is a renewable energy expert and has a wonderful lens, shown below, that goes into all the factors that should be considered when buying green carpet, with an emphasis on energy use.
He also introduced me to a manufacturer that I had not heard of - Tandus Flooring. They have a very sustainable operation in that they use waste products to create their flooring, which can again be recycled - closed loop architecture, as he calls it. While Tandus is a commercial carpet provider, doloinc suggests that residential purchasers go this route, because this section of the industry is far ahead of residential carpet.
You can see a video about the Tandus Flooring process below.

How to Recycle Your Existing Carpet

To determine where you can recycle your old carpeting, visit: Carpet America Recovery Effort
I found out that there is a carpet recycling company called Kruse Carpet Recycling about a ten minute drive from my house. The most environmentally-friendly carpet manufacturers, like the ones mentioned above, have policies whereby their carpet can be returned for recycling.

- Is there such a thing as "green" carpet? There's some debate about what constitutes a green carpet, and though carpeting can be made from a variety of eco-friendly resources, it's commonly regarded as problematic for indoor air quality. That assessment isn't universally true, however, even among carpets of the same material.
