Importance of Paper Shredder

Ranked #120,022 in Education, #1,956,046 overall

Nearly 9 million people in the US have their identities stolen every single year, and around 50 billion dollars are stolen on annual basis. This is because thieves can easily get their hands on personal information when certain documents are discarded into the garbage without being shredded.

Nowadays, paper shredders are no longer found only in offices, but in residences, hospitals and commercial establishments as well. Government organizations, businesses and private individuals use this to destroy confidential or sensitive documents. These are shredded into strips or fine particles, instead of being disposed directly in the garbage, where they are readily accessible to anyone.
For organizations and businesses, these include employee, customer or personal business documents. For individuals, personal information can be obtained anywhere one's name, social security number, telephone number and address appear. In fact, it is recommended that personal checks, expired drivers licenses, bank statements, credit card statements and receipts, pay stubs showing one's income and employer, and similar documents be shredded, since they can be used by thieves to commit fraud or identity theft.
Paper shredding is important to abide by law. considering that a provision has been made to the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, also known as FACTA, which says that every single piece of confidential employee information must be destroyed. Those who do not conform to these privacy laws can easily be led into law suits, which makes shredding far more necessary.

Paper shredders are also used for recycling purposes and waste reduction. Shredded paper can be used to create packing material. Some companies have even made a business out of shredding. They offer shredding services, which are done either on-site, using mobile shredder trucks, or at an off-site shredding facility.
There are a large number of paper shredders on the market. The two main types are strip cut and cross cut. Strip cut paper shredders slice the paper into thin vertical ribbons. They are good in many situations, but they are not recommended for people requiring maximum security. Cross cut paper shredders cut documents into tiny bits of paper that are nearly impossible to reassemble. Cross cut paper shredders are generally better than strip shredders for high security situations, but they are also more expensive. Different paper shredders are built to handle different amounts of paper at a 'time and to operate for different lengths of time. You need to follow the manufacturer's instruction to avoid breakage.
