Before proceeding to look at the five factors you will need to take into consideration when buying solar panels for your home, it is well in order for us to answer one of the most frequently asked questions about the panels: how do solar panels work?

Now describing the finer details of solar panels' workings would require a huge encyclopedic tome. What we can say in summary though, is that these panels are usually made from semiconductor materials, which tap electric energy from the sun. On that account, they are also referred to as photovoltaic solar panels.

In finer terms, we are looking at panels made out of materials whose electrons are rather uniquely attached. What happens, when such materials are exposed to the sun, is the energy from the sun makes the electrons in such materials to start 'flowing.' And as we all know, such flow of electrons is the basis for electric energy. It emerges that certain types of photovoltaic solar panels are capable of producing more electricity than others. And in terms of size, bigger solar panels are capable of producing more electricity than smaller ones. There is a further correlation: where you come to learn that the bigger the amount of electricity you need, the more you will need to invest in solar panel infrastructure, to tap that level of electricity.

An equally important consideration here is as to whether or not you are connected to the mains electricity grid. There are people in remote parts, who are not connected to the national grid, and who therefore rely on things like solar power entirely. If you are connected to the national grid, and you are only looking to supplement the electricity you get from that grid with the solar power, you can manage even with smaller solar panels. But if you are planning to rely entirely on the solar energy tapped through the panels, you need big (and typically costlier) solar panels, capable of producing enough electricity to meet all your needs.

At the moment, your electricity needs may be modest, but you also need some foresight when buying things like solar panels. That is where you'd endeavor to find out how much electricity you are likely to be in need of in the future. It is better to buy bigger panels than you strictly have need for at the moment, knowing that such panels can adequately serve your needs even as those needs grow, rather than buying smaller panels, and having to replace them at some point in the future. In the latter arrangement, you inevitably end up spending more money, and going through more inconvenience.

The amount of money you have for the project tells you what is open to you, in terms of solar panel buying options. You may be yearning for big solar panels, capable of giving you huge amounts of power. But if the amount of money you have is modest, such big solar panels may be out of reach for you. If you are comfortable financially, and you are keen on protecting the aesthetic appeal of your house, you may opt for 'solar tiles' which look better than conventional panels. Still, it makes sense to do a bit of window shopping, when looking for solar panels: keeping in mind the fact that all factors held constant, some brands of photovoltaic solar panels are cheaper than others.

The size of your roof determines the size of solar panels you can install, keeping in mind that, in most cases, these panels can only be installed on top of a building. There are, however, certain types of solar panels which are, apparently, more efficient. Thanks to that scenario, even if your roof is small, you can still install smaller prototypes of such ultra-efficient panels - and still get a reasonable amount of electricity.

For one, type (and size) of solar panels you buy for your home has to be one whose weight can be safely borne by your roof. You will get better results with photovoltaic solar panels if your roof is designed in such a way that the panels get maximum exposure to the sun. If you are planning on having the panels built into your roof (rather than simply being placed on top of the roof), the supporting structure of the roof still needs to be strong enough to bear the weight of such solar panels.
