Introduction

By Sulbin K

These days computers have become one of the many essential things that we need along with TVs and microwaves. The questions are what kind of computer should I get? What is RAM or GHZ for that matter? To help you answer these questions here is a guide on buying a computer.

This guide helps you to
- Understand today's computer jargon
- Decide what kind of specs you should really get
- Be cost-effective in buying and upgrading your PC
- Find out some brands and shops you should buy from.

Definitions

Before You Start, Get Your Head Around These Terms

RAM - Random Access Memory - generally the more memory, the faster your computer
GHZ - GigaHertz - The speed of your processor
GB - Gigabyte - The more you have the more stuff you can store on your PC
Dualcore - Basically two processors in one so it's more efficient than having one core

Get Your Specs Right

If you are a person who is not really into hard core gaming but still want to play the occasional game, process word documents and acess the internet; you really want these specs for your PC
2.8GHZ Dualcore Processor
3 GB RAM
160 GB Hard drive
DVD Reader/Writer
20 inch LCD screen
A broadband able modem
Integrated graphics

The Big Purchase

Some recommended shops and brands

A real good way to get the most bang out of your buck is choosing a product that has been on the market for at least 4 months. This way the components will not be ridiculously expensive, have bugs or errors, and more information about them will be out there in the world of internet.

Dell - they have a good after-sales service and sell a range of computers for a competitive price
PB Tech (NZ) - They basically have the cheapest and the best computer components in New Zealand.
Noel Leeming (NZ) - good prices, good range and good after-sales service.
Apple - They are expensive but their computers are mostly bought for their very good design
Intel - You should almost always get an Intel processor, they are way ahead of AMD, their main competition.

Conclusion

Hopefully this guide helped you to get the most out of your money in buying your computer.
