Buying Used Books Online
Have you bought books online in the past? Would you consider buying books online in the future? If not, what is stopping you?
Preloved books have a history to them. Some have been treasured possessions and have been very well cared for. Others are tattered, torn and not very well looked after - these are the books to avoid.
If one of your passions is reading, then there is nothing better than picking up a good book and escaping from the pressures of life. However, books can be expensive and if you are a prolific reader, buying used books can save you a lot of money.
I love books, especially used books, and I hope to be able to convince you of some of the advantages of buying second hand books, particularly the books which you find online.

Used Books - A Green Choice

There will be times when there is no other option than to buy a new book, but if you buy a used book instead of a new copy, the environment will thank you.

So, What Turns People Off Buying Used Books Online?
Postage Costs
Postage charges can eat up your profits when buying used books - the money you save on the price of the book is eaten up by delivery charges. For this reason, postage charges often discourage purchases from buying online, However, within Australia, many online sellers use Australia Post pre-paid satchels to package their books. For example, a 500g satchel can fit one or two standard paperbacks, while a 3 kg satchel can fit up to 9 or 10 paperbacks. This offers the buyer the opportunity to purchase books in bulk and pay only one postage charge. This is fantastic value for the purchaser.
Having said this, some disreputable sellers may try to make a profit from postage, therefore, if the postage seems excessive to you, question the seller and, if not satisfied with the reply, look elsewhere for your purchases.
There are many value for money books listed on the internet and, even when postage is added to the price, they still may be cheaper than the prices offered by a bricks and mortar bookstore.
Buyers are concerned about disreputable sellers
The majority of online booksellers are honest and put a great deal of effort into building a good reputation. However, it can be a worry buying a book that you haven't seen from someone you have never seen. There are a few guidelines to follow which should minimise problems arising from an online transaction.
Firstly, read the book description carefully and note any faults the book may have. The Independent Online Booksellers Association provides a list of book grading definitions which you can refer to.
Secondly, read the seller's terms of sale carefully. The Terms of Sale should provide you with information about payment methods, return policy and postage methods. Look for a seller who has a good return policy. For example, a return policy of 7 days is a minimum and a longer period is even better. If a book needs to be returned, please keep in mind that most sellers will only offer to pay the cost of return postage if the book has flaws that were not in the description. If you simply change your mind, you are responsible for return postage.
Thirdly, some sites allow buyers to leave feedback about each transaction. Take advantage of this if offered because if you have had a good experience it allows the seller to build a reputation and if you have had a bad experience, your feedback can be a warning to other buyers.
Lastly, If you have a problem with an online seller, contact them as most sellers will go out of their way to ensure you have a pleasurable shopping experience. Most problems are merely misunderstandings and remember when problems arise Communication is the Key.
Reputable booksellers want you to be happy with your purchase, and most problems are misunderstandings. If you ask questions, and make sure that what you are ordering is really what you want, you'll rarely have a problem at all.

- *sigh*
Postage to NZ is ridiculous. And because it's such a small market, books are more expensive and there are far fewer secondhand ones...
I go on raids at markets and things when I visit the UK XD
