Baby's First Shoes are a Critical Decision

It's true that your baby's first pair of shoes can change his/her life!

The trend now is to keep your baby in a soft soled shoe until they begin to walk. Doctors believe your child's feet will develop much better if they are kept bare foot (socks or booties only) until they begin to walk.

I was born in the 50s when the trend was to put shoes on your baby from the moment of birth. Maybe that is why so many of us suffer from bunions and falling arches. I have no idea if that is the case, but while searching for shoes for my two little grandsons (Mitch and Gabe, pictured here), I noticed that Stride Rites and Buster Browns are pretty much non-existent in the baby shoe department in every store I explored.

This lens is designed to help new parents and grandparents discover what those chubby little feet need the most in a shoe.

Getting the Size Right

General Guidelines for making sure you get the size right

  • stand child up to measure, when possible
  • allow 0.5 - 1 cm (¼ - ½ inch) extra when selecting shoe size
  • measure often
As a general rule, measure feet every month for babies under one year, every two months for one to two-year olds and every three months for two to three-year olds.

How To Find the Right Size

Manufacturer's Sizing Charts are Key to getting the correct size!

It is best to use the manufacturers sizing chart when selecting shoes for your child because sizing varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. The following manufacturer's sizing charts are printable pdf files for measuring your baby's feet:

Does My Baby Need Shoes?

Momo Baby Soft Sole Baby Sandal Shoes - Daisy & ButterflyRemember, putting shoes on your baby is your choice. There are fluctuating schools of thought on the need for your baby to wear shoes or not. This is your baby, so it is your decision.

The most recent school-of-thought on the subject is that your baby doesn't need shoes until they begin to walk.

When they begin to walk, a soft-soled shoe is recommended so your child can flex their foot while walking; this is believed to promote the healthy growth and strengthening of the child's arches as well as coordination.

Think about this for a moment or two: if you never put shoes on your baby until they begin to take their first steps, won't shoes be an alien accessory to them? How many mother's have done battle with a walking 14-month old who cries because the shoes are a hindrance rather than a help? I have seen it over and over again. Putting a hard-soled shoe on a child who has never had such an object on their feet causes some major crises in the adjustment period.

From this granny's viewpoint - there has to be a balance between infancy and toddlerhood on the use of shoes. The soft-soled shoes that are on the market are excellent for your pre-walking child. May I suggest as they begin to pull themselves up on the coffee table and take steps around the furniture that you move them into a soft-soled shoe with some thin rubber on the bottom to slowly transition them into the world of hard-soled shoes. I think this will reduce the major drama from your and your baby's life.

Recommend Transtioning Shoes During Baby's First Year

Transitioning Shoes

The shoes on the left are soft-soled leather booties that are great for protecting your baby's feet from weather and debris during their first year of life. When they begin to pull themselves up on the furniture and toddle around it, put them into a little more sturdy shoe like the shoe on the right. This transition is recommended solely on the premise that it will make the transition into a hard-soled shoe much smoother. It isn't because your baby needs shoes in infancy, but because one day soon they will need to wear a hard-soled shoe; I haven't seen a child go to Kindergarten in booties. Therefore, think of this "shoe phasing" as early education for your baby. If you never put shoes on your baby, then drop them into a rubber-soled shoe when they begin walking - well, you're in for some battles of the will.

Robeez are a very popular brand of infant shoe for the first year or two of life. They are soft-soled and flexible making them great for protecting baby's feet, but flexible enough to allow your baby to use his/her whole foot for learning to walk.

I was just wondering yesterday where to find some good soft-soled shoes for my little darling (who, by the way, took three consecutive baby steps yesterday).
Yes, tis truly the beginning of the rest of my life.
