- Do not allow children younger than 6 years of age on the top bunk. Nearly half the reported injuries occur in children under 6.

- Nearly 75% of injuries result from falls.

- Allow only one person at a time on the top bunk or loft bed.

- Make sure the ladder is securely attached to the bed. Take the time to show smaller children how to use the ladder.

- Ensure that the mattress fits tightly on all sides of the bed.
