What are mosquito nets?

Mosquito nets are nets used to keep mosquitoes and other insects out of a place. Mosquito nets are mainly used to cover beds to protect its users from insect bites while they sleep. Mosquito nets are an excellent way to prevent from getting insect-borne diseases such as malaria.

Mosquito nets are made either of cotton or polyester and have very small holes to prevent insects from entering the net but yet provide air circulation inside for the user. An ideal hole size of a mosquito net is 1.25 mm x 1.25 mm. For effective malaria protection, the mesh size that is recommended is 120-200 holes per square per inch.

This page provides you information on the different types of mosuito nets, the different places you can use the nets, the importance of using mosquito nets and the best places to buy quality mosquito nets.

Why use a mosquito net?

Mosquito nets help keep mosquitoes away from people, and thus greatly reduce the infection and transmission of malaria. The nets are not a perfect barrier, so they are often treated with an insecticide designed to kill the mosquito before it has time to search for a way past the net. Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) are estimated to be twice as effective as untreated nets, and a offers greater than 70% protection compared with no net.

The use of mosquito nets treated with insecticide has been shown to be an extremely effective method of malaria prevention, and it is also one of the most cost-effective methods of prevention.

LLIN's have the advantage of protecting people sleeping under the net and simultaneously killing mosquitoes that contact the net.

Places to use Mosquito nets

Mosquito nets can be used at a variety of places. Some of the places I have seen them used are:

=> (bed nets) to cover beds
=> to cover windows at home
=> to cover babies sleeping cot and play pens
=> to cover outdoor gazebo's
=> to cover head and face when travelling through jungle
=> to cover outdoor hammocks
=> to cover entire patios
=> to cover baby car seat
=> to cover tents and sleeping bags while outdoors

Different types of mosquito nets

There are several types of mosquito nets that can be purchased to suit any needs and style.

Below are some of the more common and practical types of mosquito nets.

Circular Spa Nets

Circular Spa Nets are nets that are attached around a circular ring. The ring can then be hung from the ceiling or any other object on top.

The end result will look somewhat like a pyramid with a narrow top and the bottom spanning very wide on the floor.

Umbrella Cover Nets

Umbrella Cover Nets are nets that look like a dome and can be placed anywhere. As it is self-standing, it does not need to be attched to a ceiling or a pole.

It has self folding frames that when opened creates a dome like shape. When it is folded it look just like a folded umbrella.

Four Poster Drape Nets

Four Poster Drape Nets are a common sight in many tropical countries where mosquitoes are relentless in their search for food.

These type of nets are usually used for beds that have poles attached to the four sides of the bed frame.
