Who is Buzz Lightyear

In the first Toy Story movie, Buzz Lightyear is convinced that he's a real space ranger on a mission to save the galaxy from the evil Emperor Zurg. He doesn't know that he's actually a toy.

Buzz is given to a boy named Andy as a birthday present, and becomes Andy's new favorite toy. This doesn't sit well with Woody, a cowboy doll who's used to being Andy's favorite. Buzz is bemused by Woody's jealousy and doesn't comprehend any of this. The only thing that matters to him is getting his "ship" repaired so that he can be on his way.

Buzz's world falls apart when he learns that he is, in fact, an "insignificant" toy. But Woody helps him realize that he isn't insignificant at all: He's making a child happy, and that's what makes a toy's life worthwhile.

In the second Toy Story movie, Buzz Lightyear is comfortable with who and what he is. But even though he's more self-aware and doesn't have any more delusions about himself, he's still the same heroic Buzz who's willing to risk his life to save others.

When Woody is kidnapped, Buzz analyzes some clues, figures out who stole him, and leads a rescue party to find him. Along the way he looks out for the group and keeps up their morale.

Perhaps most importantly, Buzz is there to set Woody straight when the cowboy doll temporarily forgets what being a toy is all about: To be loved by a child.
