"Whether by birth, by disease, by accident or by war, whether you ski or whether you ride one board or two, two legs or one, sit-down, stand-up, with or without sight it is our magic carpet ride, --we all glide over sparkling frozen crystals for the same reason, to be transported into another world, a Place where the crippled dance, the lame walk and the blind see, where we may all, each and everyone, not one left behind, all together, mount up with wings like eagles and join the Dance which has no end"
-Revered Doctor H. Cris Criswell
My favorite charity is...
Bretton Woods Adaptive
Bretton Woods Adaptive Program provides an opportunity for persons with disabilities to enjoy the challenges and rewards of sports and recreation with their family and friends, which can change and enrich their lives.Erin Brady Worsham is a perfect example of what the program means to someone with a disability.
Erin has ALS, amyotropic lateral sclerosis, a progressive neuromuscular condition, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Diagnosed in 1994, she has been on a ventilator and feeding tube since 1997. Almost completely paralyzed, she writes, speaks and paints using the Liberator communication device, which she operates with a sensor taped between her eyebrows. A painting can take over 300 hours to complete.
Erin found Bretton Woods Adaptive on the internet and developed a relationship via email with Cris Criswell, who encouraged her to come to Bretton Woods to ski. In March 2007, Erin's dream was realized. The Mount Washington Resort graciously hosted her family for a week's vacation.
On a cloudless, bluebird spring day, Erin was strapped and duct taped, ventilator and all, into a bi-ski and taken to the top of Crawford's Blaze at Bretton Woods. In her own words, "My paralyzed body moved forward naturally into the turns. It felt exhilarating and strangely familiar...an incredible rush."
