Bicycles as art

To most people a bike is just a form of transportation. It gets you from A to B in a healthy way. Nothing more, nothing less.

Others treat the bike a bit differently. To them it's just a starting point. A raw material that should lead to an art object. This art can take many forms: a redesigned or remodeled bike or futuristic design. It's those bikes that are featured here.

Max Chen Twist bike

Max Chen has made numerous bikes into art objects. One of his best is the Twist bike.

He took apart an old Bertin frame, twisted some other pipes and welded those together. In doing that he created this amazing bike.

Barry McGee Trek Madone

This design for the Livestrong Stages campaign was done by artist Barry McGee. He used the Trek Madone 6.9, but made the carbon frame look like it was made of metal with a rusty look. He also changed the handle bars from a racing to a more traditional one.

A little sidenote on Livestrong

Both bicycles featured above were designed to help Livestrong in their fight against cancer. Cancer is one of the global killers in our societies and even though there's progress in the fight, there's still a whole lot we need to learn. Livestrong helps people to cope with this disease and sponsors research. It's a more than just a worthy cause.

Bradford Waught Nulla design

Bradford Waugh has created a stunning bike which eliminates the use of a chain. The pedals work directly on the spoke-less wheels through innovative design. "Nulla" means "nothing" in Italian and it's a fitting name for this minimal looking bike.

Phil Frost Neon bike

Phil Frost designed this bike for the "Pressure" exhibition in San Francisco in 2008. Using his trademark layering of images and collages he created this colorful single speed racing bike.

Shepard Fairey Trek Madone

When Lance Armstrong will be racing in the 2009 Giro d'Italia he will do so on another Livestrong inspired bike designed by Shepard Fairey.

Fairey kept the yellow/black color scheme of Livestrong, but tried to incorporate a homage to the architectural elements of Italy. This bike will be auctioned off at a benefit with all proceeds going towards the Livestrong cause.

Below you will find a video of artist Shane Siedschlag applying the design to the Trek Madone 6.9 Armstrong will be using in the race.

What a cool article. How did they lace the brake cable on the twisted bike though?
