Learning how MY body loses weight

This is my story about how, after trying everything that came along to lose weight, I finally discovered what works. My search began when I was only 12 years old, and here I am decades later, finally having success.

I've discovered that ~ for me, and possibly for everyone who struggles during their attempts to lose weight ~ that there are four stages. Excitement, Waning (excitement), Chaos, and Renewal.

Here is description of the four stages as I see them.

Stage One

Excitement

The first weeks or months, everything is new and exciting! In Stage One of any diet, the weight comes off quickly and you'll have more energy. It's thrilling! It's self-motivating!

I find it's a fairly short stage, maybe two months, MAYBE three.... My Excitement stage lasted from January 10-March 15 ~ about nine weeks.

Here's what it was like for me.

Stage Two

Waning

The initial excitement begins to wear off. You may be bored with eating right all the time, or you find yourself working out less often, or with less intensity or interest. The rhythm of life has settled back in, and eating right & exercising has become an effort again.

My Waning stage lasted from March 22-June 7. A little longer than the excitement stage. Here's how I experienced this stage.

Stage Three

Chaos

Stage Three is a mess. I make wrong choices, I think "one burger won't hurt" then I eat them for three days. I sit long hours at the computer rather than stop to do a workout. I choose coffee over water, working over sleeping. I make all the wrong choices, and ... I gain weight. I lose muscle tone. I get heartburn.

Chaos seems to be a stage to get through... but there's a lot to learn here, so although I hate being in this place, if I keep my mind open, I can figure out how to avoid this ~ I hope ~ in the future. The Chaos stage began on June 14 and until there's an end date, you can assume I'm still in it.

You can read how this stage goes for me here.

Stage Four

Renewal

After chaos, after several weeks of wrong choices and increasing numbers on the scale and the tape measure, finally it comes back to me why I'm doing this. I return to deliberate choices, deliberate time set aside to work out, and deliberately making sure I drink my water and get my sleep. Putting all the pieces together again.

I'm just about ready to say I'm in this stage. You can follow my progress, here.

UPDATE: This is a perfect example of Chaos. I believed I was about to enter Renewal, but until I've made progress two consecutive weeks I know I'm not there. It is unfortunate, but... I am, after all, still stuck in Chaos.

How to help when you feel you've got nothing
Presuming as you read this that you are in the majority who were outside the direct touch of the following, think about how you feel when you hear or read about disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, the tsunami of 2004, 9/11, the Greensburg tornado, massive earthquakes, death and destruction and....
Study a Foreign Language!
All over the world, people are studying and learning English as a foreign or second language. When I visit Europe, I am impressed with how many people there speak several languages ~ fluently! English is always among those languages. One complaint I hear about the United States, over and over....
Kofu, Japan
I've lived in Japan six times, in five cities. Without any question, my favorite place is Kofu, in Yamanashi Prefecture. There were good times in the other places ~ Fukuoka, Kansai, Tsuchiura, and Hyogo, but Kofu is the place I lived not once, not twice, but three different times. I taught....
How Will My Virtual Friends Know When I Die?
This is a morbid lens, I know. But it's a thought that passes through my mind every once in awhile, and I don't know what the answer is. How will my friends ~ virtual and otherwise ~ know it when I die? Those who live in the same town as I do, or with whom we share mutual friends and at least one....
Water4Gas Charity Lens
There are so many ads out there that tell you it's possible to use water for gas. Everything is sales though, and there are hundreds of scam artists around. Everyone's after a buck, right? So, how can you find the truth? I hope you will trust this lens. I wanted the truth, and to prove to you...

What's your take on the subject?

Any tips to add?

I would love to hear from you! Let the world what's worked for you ~ share, please!

Seems like the older I get the more stubborn those few pounds become. For me it's all about staying active and making lifestyle changes that I can live with, always moving toward health. It's never easy.

* Elizabeth, you've got it right: heading in the right direction! I hope you are continuing to walk & drink your water.

* Dr. Joe, thanks for reading my lens ~ and the starsssss!

* icjackson, thank you for stopping by here & on the stage lenses. It's a different take on weight loss, you're right. These emotional stages sure are real though, aren't they?

* Jo, Uh! I forgot the rebel stage! (Oh wait, it's hiding within Chaos.) Oh, the issues and baggage... they just stick around, don't they? Forcing us to pay attention one way or another! Thanks for your comments.

I like your take on it, and I can definitely relate to the stages you've mentioned! I think we all pretty much know what we 'should' be doing - yet we don't always do it. hell, sometimes that's enough to make me want to rebel against it!!

Often there are emotional issues that are in the way, and my personal experience is that until we face up to those (eg learning how to express anger or other feelings) that weight will keep coming on again off again, on again, off again ....

journalling has really helped me, also I don't know if you've heard of Paul McKenna? He does these hypnosis CD's, and I find they help keep me in the right frame of mind to resist chocolate cake ( most of the time...)

wishing you all great success

Very interesting take on weight loss.

I favorited this because I plan to look moe deeply into your stages and see how they apply to my own efforts.

I look forward to seeing how you expand this lens in the future!

Dieting is hard. I think I've tried everyone known to man. Walking and drinking lots of water has helped me. I have a bunch of pounds to go but I'm heading in the right direction.
