Who is Savvyology?

B.Y. Penman is a mother, poet, artist, and student of life with a dry, offbeat sense of humour. She was weaned and raised on blues & folk music in coffee houses during the late sixties and early seventies. She is the proud owner of a creative mind that demands to be challenged. Art & poetry are her reasons for being.

B.Y. Penman a member of WWAO. Worldwide Women Artists Online is an international collective of women artists showing & selling their work online. She is the mind behind the poetry of Savvyology and also creates contemporary digital abstractions. Her poetry and artwork are available for purchase online through Savvyology Designs on Zazzle and Cafepress and via various online art galleries.

"My life is an ongoing study and expression of practical understanding and enlightenment." ~ B.Y. Penman

Why Savvyology And What Does It Mean?

B.Y. Penman writes poetry and creates haiga (visual haiku) under the name Savvyology. The name holds special meaning for her and evolved out of her personal outlook on life and the experiences gained raising a son with multiple complex special needs.

Savvyology:

savvy (n)
Practical understanding; cognitive condition of someone who understands.

-ology (suffix) Discourse; expression; theory

Her son was born with a life threatening condition and given a 5% chance of survival at birth. He defied the odds, being the fighter that he is, and has grown into a happy and active adolescent. As a result of his struggle at birth, he has complex special needs that make life challenging for him and his family. He has taught his mother many valuable lessons since coming into the world and is her motivation and inspiration when she writes and creates her artwork.

What Is A Haiga?

A contemporary haiga is the coupling of art and haiku. As with writing haiku, when creating a haiga the focus is simplicity of expression.

"I enjoy the freedom of abstract expression. Many of my pieces are created from original digital photographs that I manipulate using various image editing software programs, including Adobe Photoshop. I focus on form and colour to create abstract images that still retain some elements of the original picture. The results have been described as "deeply organic" and sometimes "ethereal." I enjoy pushing the limits of software and subject matter to see what I can draw out of, what often start out as, mundane photographs." ~ B.Y. Penman
