Spend less while enjoying the best! .... by a Frugal Nana

Welcome to my page.
As a Nana of many, I had to learn a long time ago that if my family were to eat well, I would need to find the best way to shop, while providing good food for my family. And, I found the way!

Frugality (also known as thrift or thriftiness ) is the practice of acquiring goods and services at minimum cost, achieved via economical restraints or creative measures. Frugality can be related to the idea of being conservative or conserving money.

With rising fuel costs affecting everything in our economy, it's time to get serious saving money on everything we bring into our homes.

And no matter what, why eat tuna when you can buy a steak? If you follow my method of shopping, you'll find you are stocked well, don't run out of everything and eat better in the long run. The same with household items or buying gifts!

Going up to the check out in a store use to be a pain, but not now!

So, come on, let's get started...

A Frugal Nana

Frugal Nana's sticky note

Fuel prices are beginning to drive up food costs, lets get busy being frugal!

How to coupon shop...

There are numerous ways to save. Coupon shopping is one of them. Most people think they need to buy the cheap brands to save money but let me assure you that you can have the absolute best and lots of it, when you learn the ins and out of couponing!
  1. Cut every coupon you find. You never know if you'll use something that is free or almost free by combining that coupon with a store coupon or a store sale or clearance.
Also, consider the things you get at little or no cost, as bartering currency with friends & relatives.
Or you can always make trades for the coupons you need with the coupons someone else needs.

One rule of thumb while couponing... if you find a good deal, be ready to stock up for the next three months on that item.
Most sales run in a cycle that lasts about three months. So, grocery shopping is about to become a bit dirrent than you are used to.
After a couple months of buying this way, you'll never run out of anything and you'll be stocked up with only the best for much, much less!
  2. Organize, organize, organize!
An easy way to organize your coupons, is to get some large business envelopes. Organize your coupns into groups that you will be familiar with. You want to access them as fast as possible before going shopping or when you find that unexpected deal or clearance item.

Use the envelope system in a plastic shoe box.

Another way to organize is to use a large 3 ring binder filled with baseball card inserts.
Make sure you set up catagories for everything you'll buy. Some like to set them up by the store isles they are used to shopping in.

I cannot say enough about the importance of knowing what coupons you have and when they expire.

Very important to label your catagories that you file your coupons in!

I find it much easier to organize while cutting.
  3. Get everyone you know to save those Sunday coupons, magazine coupons and grocery store "blinkie" coupons for you. Don't forget to pick them up!

I usually offer free food or personal items to friends and family. That way they will be way more interested in keeping your stock up!

Get known at your local restaurants or coffee house so that you can come in at the end of the day and "dispose" of all the newspapers that people read and just leave.

The coupons those papers include are bound for the trash, unless you go there to save them!
  4. Get to know your store ads and prices... get familiar with them so you'll know the best spots to go to. It might be a good idea to keep a price book of the things you purchase the most.

Don't spend a lot of fuel going clear across town to save only a few pennies. The key to saving with coupons, is planning ahead.

And stocking up on a whole lot of deals while you can get them!
  5. One of my most important tips to share with you is this...

I always look to use a current manufacturing coupon
with a store sale, and I use another store's coupon if possible. (Even if the other store coupon says manufacturers, it isn't considered one when you use it at another store.)

Another bonus that I love, is the triple dipper! Sometimes you can buy something on sale, use your coupons to get the best deal and then, because you bought that item, you use a coupon to get another item free!

So, say you buy Oreo Cookies that is one sale. You use another stores coupon that says buy one get one free and for the both you use mfr coupons. Then, to sweeten the deal, you use a coupon that says, but a bag of Oreo cookies and get one gallon of milk for free! So, if you have two of those coupons, you'll get all those cookies and a couple of gallons of milk free!
  6. I usually like to shop Albertson's or Fred Meyers. They take competetors coupons and a MFR coupon on a single sale item.
Try to keep an order as small as you can. You can always come back later or right after leaving your groceries in the car.

I like to shop really early morning or late at night so that the checkers aren't put out by my orders.

You want to work with your local stores, so they will also want to work with you.
  7. My best advice to share and always be gracious whether others are or not.

Since couponing and shopping the best deals is a fine art, we never want to convince the stores that it is too big a hassle to offer their deals.

Besides, if once it doesn't work, believe me, keep at it. Next time, you'll make up for any other times you had a rude or unkind checker.

Always understand this is a privelige we have in America, not a right!

Some valuable sites to save you money!

How much do you want to save?

OK, first thing you do, I hope, is make this your home page. That way you can have all your links in one place!
Check these sites out. You'll find out how to be the best shopper out there, using online codes and coupons and rebates. The sky is the limit!

And remember to be generous with those who have little. You can never go wrong sharing with those less fortunate than yourself.
Refunding Makes Cents
This is my absolute favorite coupon sie! Teaches the art of couponing and saving extraordinary amounts while shopping. I have had such fun on this on for many years.
You may want to subscibe to get the best online deals, but it is very inexpensive and well worth the fee.
I am forever indebted to Michelle!
The Grocery Game
If you are like me, you've gone throughout all the newspapers for years, matching coupons, then checking various websites for any new deal to use with what you have already.
The Grocery Game does it for you, giving you the best deals that match with your coupons. I highly recommend it.
Fat Wallet
Rebates. Like many other sites, FatWallet gets commissions from retailers for sending shoppers to their sites. Unlike some other sites, FatWallet shares part of those commissions with the shoppers who sign up on its site. The rebates typically range from 1% to 5% but can go higher on special deals.

Lively forums. FatWallet claims nearly a million users, and many of them are online at any given time sharing deals they've spotted and offering their reviews of products and stores. There's nothing like a hearty exchange of sometimes-heated opinions to give you a better picture of your options.
A recent Amazon.com deal on a Le Creuset soup pot generated one such squabble, with one member questioning whether the discounted $99 price was a bargain and other users defending the enameled French cookware as heirloom-worthy. You tend to come away from these discussions with a better understanding of the products' advantages and disadvantages, as well as some insights into regular users' personalities.
Never Pay Retail Again
Never Pay Retail Again

This is Your One Stop
for Finding Deals, Online Coupons, Rebates, Special Offers, Promotions, and
Big Discounts.
Coupon Share
CouponShare.com is one of the best ways to find and share coupons on the Internet. Find free shipping, great deals, share your coupons and save money. Don't shop the Internet without looking for coupons here first!
Amazon Deals by Percentage
Do a check on this site every day to see what you can get for the biggest discount. Amazon always has good deals and usually free shipping, if you spend over a certain amount. Online, I buy a lot from Amazon, including some wonderful grocery deals that come with money back coupons!
Is that coupon you printed legit?
Check here to see if that coupon link you have is for a counterfeit... We always want to keep it above board... That way, the stores will treat us just as good as we treat them!
Price Protectr - Get Your Money Back!
Few things are more irritating to a shopper than paying good money for an item, then later seeing it advertised for less. It's particularly galling if the retailer from which you purchased the item is the one slashing the price.

To assuage disgruntled shoppers, many retailers offer "price protection" policies that refund the difference between the new price and the one you paid. But it's up to you to monitor prices and bring the lower one to their attention.

PriceProtectrmakes this process automatic -- and free. If you buy something at one of the 70 listed retailers and the price drops during that store's price-protection period (typically 30 days), you'll get an e-mail notifying you with instructions on how to claim a refund.

The retailers include biggies such as Amazon.com, Best Buy, Circuit City, Staples and Target. The sign-up is dead simple: You copy and paste the URL of the item you bought, then enter your e-mail address. That's it.
My Grocery Deals
This is a brand new site that I simply love! It lists most of the grocery stores in your area, and also their sales. You may then create a list getting the best for your money, depending on who is listing the best ad price. Now remember, you still want to use these prices with your coupons!
JC Penny's Deals
So you'll want to check here on Wednesday's. Actually, every day brings some good deal that is marked down. Not everything marked down is the best, but they are sometimes magnificant. Then you'll also need to check around within the outlet.
Deal News
The site keeps track of past sale prices. Sometimes what looks like a deal really isn't. Knowing an item's past sale history helps you know whether you're getting a bargain. On a recent sale of DVD movie packs at DeepDiscount.com, for example, Dealnews noted, "With free shipping, it's the lowest total price we've seen for these titles outside of last month's 20% off promotion."

The site has a "hotness" scale. The scale reflects both the depth of the discount and the desirability of the item. Again, it's a great way to sort the steals from the routine deals.

The site is well-designed and easy to navigate. Some sites are an assault on the eyes -- crowded, confusing and awkward to find your way around. Dealnews has a nice, clean interface that allows you to quickly spot featured deals, bargains on specific items and coupons from specific stores. You also can sort deals by "hotness," as well as by recency (how long since the deal was posted) and category.
The site finds deals many of the others miss. Here's one example: a leather jacket sale at WilsonsLeather.com. The sale advertised on the retailer's site -- two lamb-leather jackets for $150 -- got even better with a promotion code that sliced 20% off the price and threw in free shipping. "For example, get this Zip Front Lamb Bomber Jacket plus this Lamb Shirt Collar Jacket for a grand total of $110.40 shipped free after all promotions. That's $55 per leather jacket," Dealnews noted.

The site is updated frequently. The home page changes throughout the day, so there are always new bargains to peruse. Expired deals are whisked away quickly, so you don't get your hopes raised and then dashed by clicking through to a bargain that's already sold out.

A note on coupons: You should always, always search around for coupons before you complete a Web purchase. Dealnews typically finds the best coupons for the deals it highlights and maintains a long list of coupons for various retailers, but no bargain or coupon site captures every discount. Use a search engine to look for "coupon" or "promotion code" and the name of the retailer you're using to find the hidden deals.
Coupon Mom

About A_Frugal_Nana

I am a housewife and mother of four who's already faced the ole empty nest and moved on beyond. I began couponing several years ago and fell in love with it. In fact, maybe a bit too much! In one nine month period I kept track of all my savings and it came o well over $10,000.00. After awhile I got burnt out and quit. Boy was it culture shock at the check out stand.. paying "normal" for groceries while I was used to a savings of at least 50%.

So now here I am again, and it's high time I help you all learn how to shop too. Save that money and send your children to college, retire your parents, give to the needy, whatever you heart desires.
