A Halloween Monster

My daughter came home from school and she told me that on second day it will be a "Halloween" school contest. She has to carve a pumpkin or to decorate any other vegetables to enter the contest.  This contest was organized last year too,and the kids  have decorated the  pumpkins and vegetables; sheep were made of cauliflower, but children have decorated peppers and potatoes, too. Now,that's a challenge! Actually I had a few hours to get a pumpkin or a vegetable, and to decorate it. We didn't have a pumpkin ,so we ran to the store and I bought a cabbage and chestnut - we'll make a cabbage monster. On the way home we collected  yellow, green and rusty leaves needed for the "monster's" hair.

Halloween Night

When witches go riding,
and black cats are seen,
the moon laughs and whispers,
'tis near Halloween.

Carving the Cabbage

We have a round cabbage, chestnuts, leaves and we will need a hammer and small nails.

I drew the monster's eyes, nose and mouth and with a very sharp knife I began to carve the cabbage.

The Monster's Eyes

Choose two chestnuts, and punch a nail in the middle of every chestnut.

With these nails you will fix the eyes of monster.

Use a hammer to beat easily the nails.

Hallow Eve

You wouldn't believe
On All Hallow Eve
What lots of fun we can make,
With apples to bob,
And nuts on the hob,
And a ring-and-thimble cake.

The Monster's Nose and Mouth

Choose a bigger chestnut which will be the monster's nose. Beat two nails in it, and set this chestnut in the place where you carved out the nose.

Now, choose the chestnuts needed for the monster's mouth. Beat a nail in every chestnut and set them in the carved mouth.

The Monster's Hair

Choose three or four leaves for the monster's hair.

Use very small nails to secure the leaves.

Now, take the bigger leaves and start to make the hair.

Put the leaves on cabbage, and secure them with small nails.

You can make the hair from yellow or green leaves only or you can use rusty leaves, too.

Put a leaf or two at the bottom of cabbage, in this way this will be nicer.
