Glossary of Terminology For Cabin Cross Stitch Patterns Page

Aida - is the grid like cloth that is specifically designed for cross stitching.

Count - is the size indicator of the number of squares per inch of the aida> Count size will also determine the finished size of the cross stitch

Chart - the preprinted graph detailing the colors and placement for your stitches. (also known as a Pattern or Graph) Floss and fabrics need to be purchased separately.

Cross Stitch Kit - Generally contains everything needed for finishing the project minus the framing..

Stamped Cross Stitch - The cloth is pre-stamped with the design placement for ease of use. This usually washes away when you complete the project.

Embellished Is also a pre-stamped cloth. Embellished however usually means that the stamped potion is meant to be part of the finished image and you only stitch part of the picture.

Floss - Is usually a cotton thread consisting of multiple strands for separating and mixing on the more complicated patterns.

Perforated Paper The paper version of aida cloth. May be painted for extra details.

Thread - May be used to indicate floss though it can also be silk or metallic in nature.

Back Of cabin Cross Stitch

Photo Right: Backside of the cross stitch pictured above.

A well done cross stitch boasts that you should be able to distinctly see the image from the back as well as the front. Meaning that you should be careful with the trimming of your threads keeping them tightly tucked and short as well as never knotting your floss to tie of the ends.

I've been a professional picture framer for over 20 years and I have stretched quite literally thousands of cross stitches over the years. In all these years of working with cross stitches I've learned a couple of things.

* Wash Hands Before Stitching Hands contain natural oils which may not wash out. If your a slow stitcher this is especially important as you will spend more time handling your cross stitch.

* Avoid Pulling Stitches Too Tight Tight stitches cause warping and buckling and can prevent the needlework from be stretched straight when it comes time to frame them.
* Stitch Everything In The Same Direction This will give your cross stitch will have a smooth and tapestry like look.

* Don't Tie Off Your Stitches Using Knots. Simply thread under previous stitches. Knotting makes your stitchery lumpy when framed.

* Bleed Check Your Floss Unless a floss says it won't run I would advise doing this. It may well save you heartache when after you washed your finished work have found that the colors have run and ruined it.

* Do Not Leave Cross Stitches In Cross Stitch Hoops For Extended Periods Of Time. Sometimes the ring marks don't wash out.

* In A Like Avoid Folding Your Cross Stitch Often the creases and smudging don't wash completely out. Simply roll your cross stitch up when not working on it.

* Wash (with a mild soap) and if necessary iron your cross stitch before having it framed. Not all frame shops offer this service for you.

No Need For Heavy Starch Indeed no need for starch at all, but avoid heavy starch as it may affect how straight the cross stitch can be stretched.
