What is Cabin Fever?

What is Cabin Fever? Cabin Fever or SAD, seasonal affective disorder, are words used to describe a gloomy state that many experience most especially during the winter months when many folks are secluded, isolated inside, out of the cold, away from the harsh elements.

Besides long periods of indoor isolation during the long winter months, the amount of light a person is subject to, a person's genes, hormones and body temperature are all contributing factors that make SAD more likely to occur.

SAD symptoms include withdrawal from normal activities and communication, excessive sleeping, eating, irritability, depression. In some cases cabin fever can become so intense that a doctor may recommend medications.

Here are a few ideas and products that may cheer up your winter blues, enable you to enjoy the beauty of the season and prevent the fever from exploding into an out-of-control fever that requires medical attention.

Walk

Ways to Prevent SAD

WalkWalk. Move. Especially in the light. It's as simple as that for anyone who can.

Walking encourages all the body parts to operate to their potential. Working the muscles, the blood, the heart and the brain.

Walking outside in natural elements satisfies the senses. It's one very important reason why we've established & protected national parks within cities & throughout countries. To keep mankind in touch with all of his parts, even the parts he may no longer be aware of.

Not everyone can get out & walk. Find the sunniest location that will fit your physical needs and move, exercise, breath! Turn off the heat & open a window a few moments a day. Savor the wind, the sun, the song bird. Put the yoga mat, the elliptical or treadmill machine on a porch, by a sunny window in an area that compliments all your senses.

Atmosphere

Prevent Cabin Fever - Enhance Your Atmosphere

Being isolated indoors during the winter months doesn't have to be so gloomy.
Do you live in an apartment without many good views? Add some eye candy to a wall! Change your space! Add some pizzazz! Murals! A city scape, a wall garden, a tree!

Do you have a favorite window? Don't close those curtains! Bring in the sunshine! Place a bird feeder in sight. If you're not into birds then maybe a treadmill by the window overlooking the playground, the main street or into that favorite tree. Choose a window with your most inspirational view. Enjoy the season!

Benefit from the affects of lighting. There are therepeutic lights to combat serious cabin fever, decorative lamps to enhance your overall indoor habitat, and sky lights that brighten your space with the winter sun!

Plants offer visual and environmental benefits. Grow easy to care spider plants, ivy, or even some edible herbs!

Walls

Prevent SAD - Stimulate the Walls

Enliven your winter habitat. Take charge of boring walls. Enrich your atmosphere by turning boring rooms and walls into a rejuvenating experience. Choose make-you-feel good themes to live in during those cold winter months.

Paint, wall paper, stenciling, or easy-to-use interior wall decals are a good place to start.

Create stimulating works of wall art without leaving a trace with washable, removable wall decals.
There's a wide range of wall art to choose from. Plants, words, sports, trees and more.
Great for homes, apartments, dorms, hospitals, nursing homes, children's rooms.

I really like wall decals. Something for everyone from infants to the elderly or make your own wall decal design.

They are simple to use, do not damage walls, no drippy paint mess to clean up.

Enjoy your windows! Window's not only add visual space to your environment but they can add a liveliness that is most often shut out.

Birds are always busy. Stimulate your own habitat by enjoying theirs!

Feeding the birds is not only good for them, it's good for you too! Of course there are many different ways to invite birds to your viewing area.
Choose your method. Toss it on the ground, hang feeders from a tree, set food on a stump or build a window platform.

Panoramic window feeders and suction cup window feeders are a treat. Up close and easily accessible. Especially good for handicap & elderly people who enjoy bird feeding.
