Cabin Fever (House Syndrome)
Cabin fever is a term which is generally used to describe those distraught individuals who find themselves isolated from other individuals by weather factors or distance and who are unable to deal with the emotional aspects of this isolation.
Cabin fever is the restlessness, boredom, or irritability which can occur from a lack of emotional stimulation or from a prolonged stay in a sparsely populated region. This emotionally based illness generally strikes when a person spends too much time secluded indoors, or in some such other location, without adequate contact with other individuals.
Individuals suffering from cabin fever become so frustrated while working or living in a remote situation that they dip to the emotional extreme of appearing crazy or acting in a crazed manner.

Symptoms of Cabin Fever

Cabin Fever symptoms may include excessive sleeping, moodiness, restlessness, irritability, irrationality, frustration, crankiness, forgetfulness, sudden bursts of laughter or tears, and distrust of other individuals.
The person suffering from cabin fever will feel a desperate need to escape from their current confines, to get outside, or to get away from their current circumstances. They begin to act in a completely irrational manner.
The first recorded case of Cabin fever came to light in 1918. But this illness is not so prevalent now-a-days, and the phrase Cabin Fever is now more apt to be used by someone who is bored with staying at home, than by someone who is actually driven mentally unstable from lack of emotional stimulation.

Fortunately Cabin fever is rare...

We may get a little bored or caged in during wet or cold weather but luckily not too many people now-a-days experience the long periods of isolation required to bring about a severe bout of cabin fever.
Even when we do find ourselves alone most of us now generally have access to a telephone, or the Internet, to help provide us with that vital link to other individuals. Another human is usually never more than a heartbeat away from us. Even when we may not seem to have anyone to reach out to, social stimulation can be found online at social networking, date, chat, and game sites on the Internet.
For those who are suffering from a genuine case of cabin fever there are ways to get relief. Number one is to get out of that isolated situation and force yourself to interact with other individuals. As humans we have a strong emotional need to socialize. Even the act of sitting in a restaurant where there are other people around you can help. Simple interactions can be the start to reintroducing yourself into the mainstream way of life again.

Modern day cabin fever...
Years ago I took a job position at a remote mountain lodge. During the summer months we had a lot of traffic from tourists but come winter things got mighty darn quiet. Worse yet was the fact that during the winter we ran with just a skeleton staff of myself, the cook, a desk clerk, the owner, and an elderly waitress.
My very first winter at the lodge we got snowed in. They closed the park gates and refused to let anyone through till the avalanche threat eased up. The lodge was very remote and it was just a large generator which even allowed us to have electricity. There was no television, Internet, or radio service at the lodge. We were a little bored to put things mildly.
It wasn't until three weeks later that we saw our first signs of life. Park rangers snowmobiled in to let us know that it wouldn't be much longer till the highway was open again.
That was my first taste of cabin fever and I really was not too impressed with it. By the time that summer rolled around again I had decided that it was time for me to move back to civilization again. Yep, cabin fever is really not all that pleasant to experience.

How to kill weeds organically
Weeds have a remarkable tendency to grow where ever you do not want them to. They sow themselves, and they appear to thrive in gardens, flowerbeds, and lawns or where ever else it is where they are the least wanted.
The seeds blow in each year on the wind, or are carried in by birds, squirrels, or other wandering wildlife. Sometimes we bring them onto our property within the small cracks and wedges in the soles of the shoes that we wear or in the tires of our vehicle. They are officially designated as "weeds" and they put you on a never ending mission to remove them from your little section of paradise....How to kill weeds organically.

Why are mosquitoes attracted to some people more than others?

If it seems that mosquitoes seek you out more often than they do other individuals, well you may not be imagining things, they really may find you to be a more attractive target than the fellow standing next to you.
When searching for their next meal mosquitoes are definitely more attracted to some people than they are to others. Specific individuals are sought out, and dined on much more frequently than their counterparts....Why are mosquitoes attracted to some people more than others?.
A Heritage Recipe: Sweet Wheat Soup

The origins of this wheat dish began long ago when farming families faced poorer times and would dine on whatever food was left for them to eat.
Back then many people lived in rural areas and produced, bartered or traded for their basic food stocks. Like so many other rural people before them, during periods of drought, crop failures or severe winter months, times would be lean and food would be in short supply. It was during these tough winter or early spring....A Heritage Recipe: Sweet Wheat Soup.

What do you do when you are lonely, lonesome, alone?
Most people will feel lonely at some point in their life. Loneliness occurs because we desire a close emotional bond with other living beings, and when we feel that we do not have this connection, then we feel lonely.
Loneliness happens for many reasons. It can occur when someone relocates to a new city, completes their schooling, retires, separates or divorces from their significant other, or loses their pet or spouse to death.
It is also possible for a person to feel alone even when you are with a spouse...What do you do when you are lonely, lonesome, alone?

The medicinal properties of honey

In today's complex world we sometimes forget that the simplest things in life can sometimes be the best things in life. Honey is one of those all too often overlooked little miracles. A very powerful medicinal food, its sweet nectar has been used for thousands of years to treat everything from the common cold and asthma, to intestinal upset, skin lesions and burns.
A powerful antioxidant with antibacterial properties; honey is well deserving of a more prominent role than it currently occupies in the treatment of today's health problems...The medicinal properties of honey.

- Wonderful descriptive and informative lens with some fantastic insight into both the disease and cabin life. As I am happy in my own company it probably would not affect me too much for a little while but we all need human contact. Blessed and featured on Blessed by Skiesgreen 2012 and also on Complex Thought or Complexity of Thinking. Well done, hugs

- Definitely! My husband is in the Army and I don't drive. Unfortunately a few years ago he had to leave at the same time as everyone we knew were moving to other bases. I was home with an infant, alone for over 6 months. My adult interaction was with the pizza guy about 1/2 way into it, then eventually I made it to the grocery store. Oh it was horrible, I was sure I'd wind up getting committed before it was over but we made it!

- Great lens! Every winter I say I want nothing more to be able to stay inside 24/7 until the cold is over. Every year someone tells me that I don't want to do that because I would get cabin fever. Maybe, maybe not. I can't see it with family still in the house with me....and the internet to keep me connected as well. Just think what I could accomplish on housework, my crafts, and online in that time of staying inside too!

- Yes, and it doesn't have to happen in isolated places either! I've just had bronchitis for over a month, and have had no energy to go anywhere very much at all. Very boring, and I got so sick of these four walls and being home, much as I love it usually. :-(

- Seams to me in this hectic world today that there's a thin line between a couple of weeks of a quiet life away from everybody and a serious trouble under the name of cabin fever. This story of yours brings back that excellent movie with Jack Nicholson. Have you seen it? It's about a man who went to this isolated hotel to be the winter caretaker, but things went out of control. It's called "The Shining" and I totally recommend it. Great lens! Blessed!
