A "Local" Point Of View About The Great Smoky Mountains
Breaking News: Don't Rent A Cabins In Gatlinburg Or Pigeon Forge Until You've Seen and Read This Information!
Let's face it ... when it comes to vacationing in Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge and what to do once you get here, you can get lost in a maze of nonsensem money drainers in a flash and (you guessed it), Cabins In Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge! As a resident of the Great Smoky Mountains for nearly twenty years, this lens on the area is being shared with a slant towards what a "local" knows about the area that could seriously add to your vacation in Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and the surrounding areas - and it could save you a "boat-load" of frustration.
Cabins in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are a dime a dozen (well sorta), but if you want something nice, stay off the main Parkway at least 1/2 a mile. This will cut down on some road noise and traffic around your cabin.
Many companies here tote the term "LUXURY CABINS". Be forewarned! Just because a company has hundreds of cabins to offer you certainly doesn't mean they have luxury. In fact, it can mean they've outgrown their boots! I've literally seen cleaners walk in cabin close to my residence and be there for thirty minutes - tops!
Now, dear friends of the Squid, I'm telling you, you CAN NOT clean a cabin (in thirty minutes) after a heard of drunk elephants have partied in it for a week. I can't clean my kitchen counter in that amount of time!
So, in a wrap, I think a smaller company has less to keep up with and more time to do it. This isn't rocket science. Here's A Great Cabin Rental Company For Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge!
As for eating out (in the Pigeon forge and Gatlinburg area) goes, well...
Eating This one can be seriously tricky.
Many establishments realize that if they lose your business, there are approximately 13 Million annual visitors to replace you. This is sad but just plain old true! Now, not all are bad.
Just be careful.
Consider these local favorites:
-Clints BBQ Dolly Parton Highway (411) towards Newport and about 7 miles out of downtown Sevierville. About a 12 minute drive from the center of Pigeon Forge. Ask around and someone will get you there.
-The Old Mill Cafe Right in the center of Pigeon Forge. This little cafe and the whole clutch of shops that are around it are charming and just beautiful. The food is very good. A favorite place for my wife and I in the Spring and Fall, especially by the outside water garden.
-The Chop House & Conners Both are at Five Oaks Outlets and have outstanding food. The creme brulee is to die for at Connors. Shorts or tuxedo and you'll fit in great.
If you're looking for good pizza, the best in the area is at Smoky Mountain Pizza Company (ask for Will and tell him Jerry & Gina sent you).
This is the shortlist but highly recommended. Learn more about the whole area at The Official Pigeon Forge Cabin Guide.
Entertainment This one could last forever but I won't drive you nuts here. Again, we'll compile a shortlist and hit a few things that most people don't realize they can do here. Remember, mainstream media hits on the things that they believe the majority of the people do and many times the "dives" and secret spots get forgotten about. So, here we go...
Metcalf Bottom in Townsend This place is absolutely gorgeous. It's right next to the stream and there are many picnic tables and grills scattered all around the place. Grab some burgers and the fixins for them, a book, a couple fold out chairs and be prepared for cool breezes next to the stream. A great place to sit and relax, hop in the cool stream, practice photography of the Great Smoky Mountains, watercolor, or fall asleep under a tree. Go about 12 miles out towards Wears Valley and make a stop along the way at a local gas station and they be able to give you the exacts on how to on in to the stream. This is worth the 20 minute drive out of the heart of Pigeon Forge.
Dollywood and Splash country are just fine. They are good family entertainment but have your pockets full of money because it most certainly isn't cheap.
Now don't let that keep you away- heck, it hasn't stopped millions of others. But, I would think serious about packing a lunch. If you can save the cost of one meal from either of these attractions, you'll have saved $40-$50 for a small family of four.
A Final Thought... When you think of going to the Great Smoky Mountains, remember you are doing that very thing - coming to the mountains. Try to think of some things associated with the mountains like hiking, sitting or fishing by a mountain stream, taking some photos of the countryside. Just simple relaxing and taking in the mountains. Do these things when you come to our area will certainly give you a feeling of having truly experienced The Great Smokies. There's tons of things to do here, just make sure you weave in some good simple life entertainment. A great resource for the area is The Official Pigeon Forge Cabin Guide.
