What is a Native American Fetish?

Read on for some interesting facts.....

                                                   What is a Fetish?

A Fetish is an object which is believed to have magic powers.

American Indians have used Fetishes throughout recorded history; especially the Indians of the Southwest.

Fetishes may be of any form or material. Regardless of the form or material however, a Fetish has one paramount purpose; to assist man against any real or potential problems. The problems can be those of the mind, the body or the universe.

Most Fetishes relate to animals. Most often these animals are animals of prey. They are acknowledged as the most powerful providers in life; so, they are likewise accepted as having the greatest Fetish powers. They are generally admired for their strong hearts. Many believe their strong hearts make them dominant and therefore, survivors; the hunter rather than the hunted.

The Zuni Indians of New Mexico believe strongly in six cardinal guardian Fetishes. Each is symbolic of a direction and has a specific color with which it is associated. The guardian Fetish of the North is the mountain lion (yellow). The South (red) is the badger, the West (Blue) is the bear and the East (white) is the wolf. Additionally, the mole is the guardian of the Nadir of Inner Earth (black) and Zepath (the air) is the eagle (all colored bird forms)

Most Fetishes are made from semi-precious stones, minerals and shells which are of natural beauty that are the gifts that nature has provided us. Many Fetishes are made of malachite, azurite, pipe stone, soap stone, marble, jet, sugilite, turquoise, coral, spiny oyster, amber and several varieties of serpentine.

I am constantly in search of new fetishes to put in my creations. At this time I don't have many. My search in cyberworld continues for various Native American artists that can supply me with small fetishes suitable for my type of jewelry making. I'd really appreciate any leads you can give me. Just contact me thru Squidoo. :)

Altho many of my fetishes used are handcarved, they are 'not' Native American made. (at the time of this published lens.) Should I use an authentic N.A. fetish, it will be noted in my description. Cost will reflect whether the fetish(es) are genuine or not, also.

New Line of Jewelry.....Healing Chakra Jewelry!

Come and explore my new line.

I've dedicated a section on my Jewelry FAQS & Care  page explaining a little about Chakras, what they are, where they're located in our bodies and how they relate to our well-being. There is also info on each items' listing. This is a new exploration for myself and it's been fun!

A couple of my friends, one who is still studying and the other who is a Reiki and Karuna Master had asked me to start making this jewelry. I accepted their offer! My Reiki/Karuna Master friend is world-known, recognized my top Spiritual Healers, and has many exciting upcoming events happening. Not sure I can tell you yet.....I'll write more later. I should definitely get her permission to name names. ;)

Please enjoy your journey browsing through my Chakra jewelry category. It's still very small as I've just started...so check back often! See ya 'round!

Silver

I'm a winter and I wear black/white, and deep jewel colors, which all go best with silver! Even my wedding ring is white gold.

The_Homeopath says:

Silver. A classic that goes with anyone's style.

AnotherBob says:

I think I agree with Lakota. I like silver, too. Have a few Indian-made rings in sterling and turquoise. Thanks for the fun!

Lakota429 says:

Hmmmm...mine's obvious. Silver has always been my favorite! :)

Gold

Tipi says:

I love the gem stones, favor turquoise mostly!

I like the look of silver but I break out from it so I have to go with the gold.

kiwisoutback says:

I'd say gold. I think it depends on what looks best on you in terms of tone of your skin.
