I've admired Julius Caesar for many years.

Firstly, I admire how he lead his armies. In an era when many generals treated their soldiers like cattle, Julius Caesar treated them as comrades. He shared their conditions and their hardships, he never insisted on 'battle discipline' except in battle and during training missions. In his own battles he never loitered at the rear, he fought in the thick of the action. And he knew how to solve problems: eg faced with the expense&other difficulties occasioned by soldiers losing their weapons in battle, he responded by gold plating his soldiers' weapons. Now they were so proud of their 'gear' they would NEVER lose it in battle!

Also, Julius Caesar was a great administrator. He knew that Rome was collapsing under the mismanagement of the corrupt & inbred Roman Senate. So he brought in 'new blood' - including rulers from Gaul (newly conquered by him) - installed them in the senate "to give a fresh perspective." He himself knew that Roman administration needed a complete overall, which he was determined to bring. Fixing the calendar, ensuring veterans received their promised land-allotments, reorganising poor relief - nothing was too big or small for Julius Caesar to reform.

His work was tragically (and prematurely) ended by his assassination. Rome lost not just a military hero but a civilian leader par excellence. His work - his conquests and his reforms - laid the foundations for the subsequent Roman empire.
