Who Invented Coffee?

It may seem strange but coffee hasn't been around forever! In fact it was not discovered until around 600AD in the Middle East. It came to Europe in the 16th Century. In the 500 since it came to Europe, it has spread around the world and become an international trade.

Every morning, after I peel open each eyelid, I offer a silent thank you to the genius who invented coffee. We know where it came from, but not who actually had the brilliant idea to grind up the beans and make a drink. I'm not what you-or anyone else-would call a morning person . The man who invented coffee. Do not misunderstand me, I am not a coffee addict.

    Who Invented the Coffee House

    Now, this is unofficial

Given that Austria more or less invented coffee houses, this seems to be bringing coals to Newcastle. I mentioned this to my hosts, and they said Starbucks competed through offering services the incumbent coffee/pastry places didn't, such as takeout services. Given how little value the stuff has at the intermediate stages, how did we ever get to the final product? I'm seriously befuddled by human ingenuity.

I, too, am a coffee fiend. I go for strong & dark, unadulterated (except--rarely--by alcohol...).

Great lens - I'm off to check out your CafeBuzz site now!

As far as brewed coffee, I've formed a sort of 'sub-addiction' for Sumatra coffee. I have a short article written up about it here.
For an interesting experiment, try sipping a cup of each variety (Gayo and Mandheling) of Sumatran coffee and see if you notice the differences and similarities.

(I'd recommend doing this with small-ish cups - it's NOT a weak coffee!)
