How CafePress Measures Up
August 29, 2008, the addiction to having a CafePress Shop began. After reading over the two types of shops, Basic and Premium, I decided to start out with the Basic shop. Not wanting to spend any money. I will explain the difference between the two types of shops that Cafepress offers. The pros and cons of CafePress with some comparison to having a Zazzle shop. At this moment I am a member of CafePress and Zazzle.
What is CafePress?
Coming off of CafePress.com site:
CafePress is a community of 6.5 million members, where folks from all walks of life gather online to create, sell, and buy T-Shirts and other "print-on-demand" products (it's called user-generated commerce, and we're the leader in it). Our Shopkeepers offer over 150 million products-including everything from funny T-Shirts to custom hats, hoodies, mugs, and more. With so many choices, CafePress is a great place to find gift ideas for personalized gifts and one-of-kind gear. If you can't find the perfect design, simply create your own custom T-Shirts or even custom embroidery. Rewarding self-expressionists since 1999, CafePress is based in San Mateo, CA.

Pros of Having a CafePress Basic Shop
Also applies to the Premium Shop
* CafePress Basic Shop is free.
* You can upload a logo for your shop. But does not look as nice as the header you can upload for Zazzle.
* Provide a shop description with your logo.
* CafePress watermarks your images for security.
* Mailing list features help you keep in touch with your customers.
* Promote your products in the CafePress.com Shopping area.
* The base price is lower overall than a Zazzle shop. This is the price that the shopkeeper pays with 0% markup.
* Text images are on a template that you created from your computer. That way you have a record of what you uploaded.

Cons of Having a CafePress Basic Shop
Also applies to the Premium Shop unless noted
* The Referral Program will be discontinued as of March 12, 2009. It has been less effective over the past few years. But you will still get credit for those who you refer before March 12, 2009.
* If your software doesn't allow transparent background before uploading to CafePress.com, then you will have a white background on the dark items. (This may be different for the Premium Shop).
* CafePress, along with most online shops have a high base price.
* CafePress will timeout if you have spent over a certain period of time on its site.
* Cannot add banners to description in HTML format. (May be different with the Premium Shop).
* A Basic Shop is plain looking. It lacks Zazzle. (Premium Shop is professional looking)
* Can not add background color to magnets, buttons, etc.
* The module used on Squidoo has small pictures for the products. (Zazzle module is bigger and better looking).
* A Basic Shop only allows one of each product item per shop. Therefore multiple shops have to be created with a different URL.

Premium Shop you only need one.

We have removed Banners, Yard Signs, and Calendar Prints from the Marketplace channel due to seasonality and decrease in customer demand. For some Shopkeepers, these products make sense as you have designs that make these products attractive to customers who visit your shops year-round. So, these products will continue to be available in your shops.

CafePress Premium Shop or Zazzle Shop
I don't have a Cafepress Premium Shop. But in my opinion (even though it is a paid shop), I think it looks more like a professional online store than a Zazzle Shop.
Look at my Zazzle shop Sandyspider Gifts Go ahead an look around to other shops as well if you have never seen a Zazzle shop. There are much better looking shops than mine.
Whether you have either of these shops, from what you have seen, which one looks more professional?

I have 3 Premium Cafe Press shops and 10 basic shops. Have been there 4 years. Cafe Press shops just changed their shopkeeper markup rules and I had to leave the Market Place (the site directory). I made over $3,000 last year, but, with the new rules, will only make about $500 this year.

Zazzle Shop
BarbRad says:
The Zazzle Shop appeals to me more. It doesn't look so busy as Cafe Press. I still can't image anyone paying the prices either of these sites charge, even though I like the products. I guess some people have more money to burn than I do.

- Thank you for presenting such good information and examples. You have some lovely designs. I still can't imagine anyone buying these items in less than bulk, though, and that they would only buy in bulk for special events or for the holidays. I used to be a greeting card buyer for a store, and can see some exclusive gift shops buying in bulk, but it would still be cheap for them to design their cards and have them printed locally , I would think. I guess I inherited the thrifty gene from my Scotch-Irish dad.
