The thought of being stuck in a confined space for over 24 hours with a baby will probably send shivers down the spine of most people. Long haul flying, especially in economy class, is exhausting and stressful at the best of times - let alone with an infant in tow. But it can be done, and without going completely insane.
The key to having a bearable experience is in the planning and preparation of your trip. Choosing the right airline and flight, packing the appropriate equipment and clothing (without overpacking) and adopting an attitude of "expect the worst and hope for the best" (you may be pleasantly surprised!)will help you survive the journey.

Current Travel Restrictions due to Terrorist Threats
Bottled water and other drinks have also been banned. According to CNN, baby formula and medications are exempt from the ban. However it is probably a good idea to double check with the airline if you intend to fly overseas in the next few days. The BBC website has a full list of allowable items - note that baby milk is allowed, but must be tasted by the parent/carer. Baby sanitary items, ie nappies/diapers, cream and nappy disposal bags are permitted. Liquid medicines are not permitted - this means that over the counter medicines such as baby Panadol or Tylenol are likely to be confiscated.
From the Dept of Transport:
All passengers must be hand searched, and their footwear and all the items they are carrying must be x-ray screened.
Pushchairs and walking aids must be x-ray screened, and only airport-provided wheelchairs may pass through the screening point.
In addition to the above, all passengers boarding flights to the USA and all the items they are carrying, including those acquired after the central screening point, must be subjected to secondary search at the boarding gate. Any liquids discovered must be removed from the passenger.
There are no changes to current hold baggage security measures.
Regrettably, significant delays at airports are inevitable. Passengers are being asked to allow themselves plenty of extra time and to ensure that other than the few permitted items listed above, all their belongings are placed in their hold baggage and checked in.
These additional security measures will make travel more difficult for passengers, particularly at such a busy time of the year. But they are necessary and will continue to keep flights from UK airports properly secure. We hope that these measures, which are being kept under review by the Government, will need to be in place for a limited period only. In light of the threat to aviation and the need to respond to it, we are asking the tr

On-board Tips for Flying with Baby
Seat Pocket Essentials
Here's a list of my seat pocket essentials:
* plastic shopping bag for rubbish - you would be surprised by the amount of rubbish you can accumulate in such a short amount of time (think, plastic bag for headphones, empty cups etc)
* at least one baby toy to distract baby when s/he is fed up with sitting restrained on your lap during takeoff
* dummy/ pacifier
* cloth nappy/diaper for spills and spew
* bottle or cup of water for baby
* bottle of water for breastfeeding mothers
* cotton or muslin wrap - for calming baby to sleep, or for breastfeeding or for playing hide and seek - there's a multitude of uses for it!
* pen - for filling in forms
* ziplocked bag with a snack in it, in case baby is hungry - see infant meals
* lip balm (maybe it's just me, but my lips get awfully dry in the air-conditioning)
If you are feeling optimistic that your baby will sleep for most of the flight then also include a book or magazine - but if you are like us you will be hard pressed being able to read the entertainment program in the inflight magazine!
