SuperBug

Welcome to my new lens, letting the world know about my Cafepress shop, SuperBug!

SuperBug sells a range of geeky gifts for scientists, featuring friendly bacteria, the elements of the periodic table and plenty of science nerds, plus more.

Microbe of the Month - Mycobacterium tuberculosis

M. tuberculosis is the king of pathogens - it causes tuberculosis, a nasty lung infection that has been around for thousands of years. TB kills more people than any other infection and shows little intention of going away. What makes M. tuberculosis so clever is that it can survive in the host for sometimes decades, effectively hibernating and waiting for the immune system to become weakened. Something like 1/3 of the world is infected with this little guy, and its not just developing countries - the UK and the US have big problems too!

Impressed? An M. tuberculosis bacteria design is available on a range of products from SuperBug!

New designs are added to SuperBug every week. This week, lots of the new additions have been cute cartoon cells, such as the 70's themed Boogie with Bacteria and the War in the Middle Yeast designs. I've also made a couple of thesis related designs seeing as I've recently gone through the hell of trying to write up my PhD.

Did you know?....

Fun facts about bacteria!

- Did you know that the average computer keyboard has 100 times more bacteria lurking on its surfaces than an orinary toilet seat?

- Life as we know it wouldn't exist without bacteria. We wouldn't have beer or cheese to start with, and our digestive systems would be pretty messed up too!

- Of all the cells found in a human body, 90% are bacteria. They're on your skin, up your nose, in your gut, and between your toes! Everywhere in fact. Bacteria are tougher than humans and some extreme versions are found happily living in boiling hot springs and in ice. There are few places where you won't find bacteria if you look hard enough!

- Did you know that Escherichia coli is one of the predominant species of bacteria living in your gut, and, most of the time, these little microbes do us no harm at all?

- Did you know that the mechanism allowing the bacterial flagella to rotate is the only example of the wheel found in nature?

- 99% of bacteria are harmless - its the 1% of nasty species that you need to watch out for!

- Your kitchen sponge could be deadly - this is easily the filthiest place in your house and deadly species of bacteria lurk in the cloth that you use to clean your kitchen. Yuk. Try microwaving in a cup for 1 minute to kill any nasties.

- Some sugars in beans can't be broken down by humans so bacteria in the gut get a nice feast. Unluckily for us, they produce lots of gas as they eat the sugars and we're the one's who get the blame when it escapes!

- Human poo is a mixture of undigested food and bacteria, alive and dead. We can get really ill if we ingest this bacteria, so humans have evolved to be revolted by the smell, meaning we usually avoid eating our own poo. Something called skatole is responsible for the stink, it also happens to be used as a flavouring in vanilla ice cream. Seriously.

- There are around 200 different species of bacteria lurking in your large intestines.

- There is around 1kg of bacteria in the human gut!
