About dice
How often have you given any thought about the mechanics of the humble die?
Role playing and simulation games have introduced dice in non-cubic shapes, but the traditional spotted cube has endured the test of time. In fact, dice are credited by several historians as the oldest gambling device invented by man. I would like to take some time to give the humble cube another, more detailed, look...Read more...
DIE!
1st Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons(TM)
Does it really deserve its reputation as the greatest FRPG ever?
A publicist might tell you that Dungeons & Dragons first came to the public in 1978 when the Players Handbook was published by TSR. But its roots go back much farther than that. But one can say that Dungeons & Dragons popularity began in 1978. That game hit the ground running, and hasn't stopped since. It has launched a thousand other games in the same genre. And despite the negative publicity the game received in the later 70's and early 80's, financial struggles through the 90's, and a corporate take-over in 2000, the D&D franchise has remained one of the strongest in the gaming industry. Games and genres come and go; from Traveller to GURPS to MMORGs to Bunnies & Bazookas to d20. But all have roots to one degree or another in that first game. To some of us, it's the Blue Box set, to others its the PHB, DMG, and MM, to still more, its Greyhawk, Eldritch Wizardy, and Chainmail. But in the end, its all those together. Is 1st Edition AD&D the greatest FRPG ever? That's up to you to decide. The game is great, and it will forever hold a warm place in my heart for all those teenage memories. But gaming is what gaming is. And though there are other great games out there (some by large corporate game franchises like Wizards of the Coast, others by small POD publishers, like the Usherwood Adventures), they all owe their roots to a small off-shoot of miniature wargaming enthusiasts located in Lake Geneva, WI back in the latter years of the 1960's for having had the imagination to add wizards and dragons to their ranks of foot soldiers. PBeM'ing 101
If my boss knew how much gaming I did at the office, I would be canned but quick
PBeM'ing (or, Play-by-email gaming to the unintiated) is much more than a costly distraction at the office. It is a continuation of the joy and fun we late-term baby-boomers who cut our eye-teeth on 1st Edition Dungeons & Dragons rely greatly on in order to get our fix of FRP gaming (fantasy roleplay). There are precious few PBeM campaigns though that manage a long fruitful life in cyber-space. Many things--career, home, international time zone differences, play style, house rules, etc.--conspire against the PBeM'er, and the DM in particular, and create an atmosphere which goes against successfully maintaining a strong PBeM campaign. Here's how I managed to keep the Usherwood Adventures PBeM alive and strong for over 2 years of continuous game play... Fun Stuff at the Usherwood Adventures Company Store
