It's All About The Schnauzers!

I got into Miniature Schnauzer rescue a couple years after becoming disabled in 1998. I already had three Mini's of my own, Sheina, Sparky, and Scrappy Jack. I had no idea there could be purebred Schnauzers in rescue... who would ever give one up?? Boy, was I mistaken. There are at any time many dozens if not hundreds of schnauzers in need of rescue across the country in every age, color and description.

I adore the Miniature Schnauzer and love to feature it in my artwork, which is sold at my Cafe Press store at http://www.cafepress.com/Schnauzies to benefit our rescue's vet expenses fund.

The before and after photos at left are of Harry, a tiny 9 lb. Miniature Schnauzer we rescued in 2005 from a shelter in Grand Island, Nebraska, where he had been found wandering in a snowstorm! Harry died when his adopter dumped him in a kill shelter in Missouri. You can read his story here at http://www.squidoo.com/harryschnauzer.

Since 2000, we have rescued, rehabilitated and placed over 50 miniature schnauzers and a few other kinds of dogs (including a Basset Hound with seven puppies!!) for adoption. Right now we have six furkids here counting my precious granddog Winnie, and I still have Scrappy Jack who is now ten.

All of the dogs adore it here at the new house in Omaha and we love being here. We have a very large yard for them to roam around in with a nice wood fence.

You wouldn't believe how many purebred dogs end up in rescue for various reasons - the most common is that people's living situations change and there is no room for Fido anymore, sadly. Some dogs come to us with behavioral issues or health issues that can be improved and then we can find the RIGHT forever home to match the furkid with.

Our work is not a fast process. The average dog spends 3 weeks to 6 months up to many years in my home or another volunteer's before being placed in its forever home. We won't place a dog just anywhere, it has to be the right match.

Some dogs are just un-placeable and end up spending their lives with me. My first rescue, Casey Anne O'Schnauzey, was 9 years old and half blind when she was rescued and ended up spending her last five years with me. Most people don't want to adopt older dogs because they fear expensive vet care, messes, and other issues. This may be true in some cases, but the dog still has so much love to offer in return. They are WORTH iT!!!

Please consider volunteering in your area. Just look up Miniature Schnauzers on Petfinder.com and see which rescues are posting dogs; contact them and see if they need help!

We also appreciate any help you can give to us, of course, and we've made it easy by donating through online shopping you're already doing anyway, which costs you nothing; and lots of other ways, listed below.

We love our dogs, we love you for loving them, and please stop by again! -- Sheila

Ladybug's Awesome Adventure!

What a great little dog!

Ladybug went on a big bye-bye trip with us to Kansas City this February. She had the time of her life, and got to play with her BFF Yorkie, Lucy Liu. She was the most amazing bye-bye dog I've ever known. She just ate it all up, from her first elevator ride and first hotel room to her special treat dinners!!

We Lost Our Beloved Koby.

The diabetes finally won.

Koby fought a long battle with diabetes, losing all his eyesight in the process, and ending in January with a final critical illness. He was the bravest dog I ever knew, enduring insulin shots twice a day without a whimper and learning to find his way so bravely without his sight. Koby came to us in 2007 as an owner surrender and I came to just adore him. He was one of my "heart dogs." You can read Koby's whole story at http://www.squidoo.com/kobyschnauzer. Here is how I want to remember him, he so loved his swimmie pool.

Koby Dressed Up For Halloween!

What a Sweetie!

Last night I was getting all the furkids dressed in their Halloween suits, and I noticed poor Koby was feeling left out. (Koby is totally blind as a result of diabetes.) We had an extra Ladybug costume and I thought, what the heck - so what he's a boy! So I dressed him up, and he instantly had a change in demeanor - he was all waggy-like and happy, and trotting around showing off! I had my walker over by the front door so I could easily answer the door for the trick-or-treaters. Koby laid on the floor right next to me for about an hour and a half. When the trick or treaters would come to the door, he would get up and walk to the door, sniffing the air and wagging, but he naver barked once at them! He KNEW. What a sweet little guy he is, and how lucky I am to still have him. Happy Howl-O-Ween, Koby!

Our Ladybug Was Really Sick!

(She's all better now!)

Update 10-30-11, Ladybug is totally well and back to herself, thank God!! She had to eat prescription food to help regain all the weight she lost. At the worst of it, she was close to 5 pounds. Now she is back to her usual 8-9 and looks great!

10/14/11, A week ago today I took Ladybug in to the vet. She had some vomiting, was very lethargic and had the chills and wasn't eating. They figured out she had two kinds of worms (whips and hooks) along with a bad ear infection. They had to give her sub-q fluids, four different medications, and put her on a heating blanket as she had very low body temp. I gave her all the meds and treatments for three days, then I had to check in Monday for my hip replacement.

My daughter carried on her treatment and by the time I got home from the hospital yesterday, she seemed somewhat better, but still was not eating. Cari had taken her back to the vet and they gave her some drops to improve her appetite and recommended Pedialyte and prescription food and hard boiled eggs. Last night I cleaned out all the "yuck" from her ears and restarted her ear drops and kept her warm. She did eat the hard boiled egg and did so again this morning, but I was very excited that just awhile ago she ate the entire can of prescription food! Her ears look MUCH better today. So perhaps she has turned the corner - I hope and pray so, because this little baby being sick is about to kill me. She is SO thin after being so sick for over a week, and it will take a lot of nursing her back to health. THAT we can surely do, especially now that I am back home with her.

Schnauzers Checking Out Their New Custom Made Food Trough!

Monty and Harry Find Eating IN The Trough More Efficient!

My son John built a made-for-schnauzers eating trough, he is quite handy at woodworking! This was the dog's first try eating at it and the two little guys decided it was more fun to jump up IN the trough to eat!

Thank You!! Woof! Wag-Wag!!!!

We got a much needed present!

Our friend and rescue volunteer Bonnie just did something wonderful! She made the incredibly soft fleece blankets the furkids are lying on in the photo. They are even embroidered with "Sheila's Schnauzies" on them!!! She brought us a dozen in all! Bonnie, they sure did pass the nap test with flying colors, girlfriend!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Here are Scrappy, Koby, Bailey and Monty enjoying their gift.

How You Can Help!

We need volunteers!

We desperately are in need of foster homes so that we can help more dogs. Due to my health, i am having to stop bringing rescues into my home to stay. Volunteer Sheryl in Iowa is also full to capacity! So we need YOU! What's involved? A lot of love, patience, and helping with rehab of any issues the furkid may have, with guidance provided of course. Fosters are given first shot at adoptions when the dog becomes available so if you fall in love, we may be able to work something out for you. If you are interested in volunteering to be a foster parent, a transport driver, a groomert/bather, etc, please email me at sheilaschnauzies@gmail.com
You can also make a donation to help our furkids securely through Paypal.
to the email address, sheilaschnauzies@gmail.com. You may also make direct contributions to our Veterinarian, Dr. Ray Thiele, Harrison Street Animal Clinic, Ralston, NE at (402)596-0355.

Another great way to help is by doing your online shopping starting at iGive.com. They have thousands of online stores available which donate a percentage of sales to our rescue! All you have to do is sign up at iGive.com (it's free!) and specify Sheila's Schnauzies as your charity beneficiary. Then watch your dollars go to work! OH and I almost forgot to tell you - just signing up at iGive donates $5.00 to us!!!

Thank you!!!

What an AMAZING lens! And even more amazing is the work you are doing with miniature schnauzers -- it is unbelievable that you have rescued and placed over 50 of them! People like you truly make a difference to the dogs we all love. Thank you Sheila!

We too often forget our responsibilities to pets. sure we love puppies or kittens, but then we realize they need constant care, the need a doctor, they need out time... I think people should have a licence for a dog like they need it for a car. Or a gun.
I hope i have not strayed too much from the subject. You made lovely lens. Thanks!

Very sweet lens! If the humans were more responsible breeders and not be so greedy, that alone would help resolve with throw-away animals/pets

Sheila's Schnauz rescue took a 14 year old Mini Schnauzer from my rescue organization when nobody else would. His name was Ole Man River, we rescued him from our local animal control where he was laying in a concrete kennel staring at the wall. Her volunteer Larry was supposed to be the halfway point, but ended up keeping him and giving him a good life from May, up until about a week ago, when he took a turn for the worst, and had to be euthanized. I am eternally grateful to Sheila and Larry, I contacted at least 7 rescues and they were the only ones who weren't scared off by all of his health problems, and were willing to give him a second chance at life. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

Schnauzers sure are very cute breeds of dogs. They look like great men with great beards!I really enjoyed staring at my Robert ( my schauzer) especially when he shakes his head to get rid of water from his mouth! I once caught a picture of him doing that and I put it up front on my schnauzer checks and my friends are entertained by it! never imagined that my schnauzer checks can entertain anyone! you might also try to do this, too! try to check it out! anyway, thanks for this lens of yours! Great work! i should give it 20 stars!
