Why goats make great pets.

* Goats were one of the first animals to be tamed by humans and were the most popular herd animal 9,000 years ago.
* Goats have no front top teeth- instead they have what is called a 'dental pad' or hard gums. They have 8 lower teeth and 24 back molars for grinding food.
* Goats can live up to 20yrs if well kept.
* Goats can easily be housebroken , much the way a puppy is.
* Goats are smart and can learn and respond to their given name in less than a week
* The pupil in the goat's eye is rectangular in shape instead of being round like those of most other mammals. Goats have excellent night vision.
* Goats have a 4 chambered stomach and chew cud, (a plug of partially digested food stored in the largest compartment of the stomach called the rumen).
* Goat feces has little to no odor, produced in small pea sized pellets.
* Goats do not charge people and try to use the horns as instruments of mass destruction.
* Goats are fastidious eaters and typically will not eat dirty or spoiled food.
* Goats have relatively few diseases, very few which as zoonosis (no more than any other pet animal)
* Goats make great pets
* Goat milk is the most easily digested milk from any animal and quite often used by those who are lactose intolerant.
* Soaps made with goat milk is often used for patients with skin disorders

Coping with Heat Stress!

Know the Dangers of Summer Heat!

Tips on keeping your goats cool
# Have plenty of fresh, cool water available at all times-put powdered electrolytes in the water.
# Avoid the midday sun - keep your walks or play sessions to early mornings and late afternoons when it is cooler
# Don't over-exercise your pet when it's hot
# Be extra careful with longhaired, overweight, young or older animals
# Never leave your goats tied up, even on an overcast day - the temperature inside can rise to lethal degrees within minutes.
# Provide a fan (out of reach of curious goats) to provide air circulation.

Signs of Heat Stress-
Animals pant to lower their body temperature - they do not sweat like humans. If your goat is overheated you may notice:

# Excessive panting
# Salivating
# Vomiting
# Diarrhoea
# Increased heart rate
# Seizures or strange behaviour
# Overly red or purple gums
# Coma or even death within a few hours

What to do-
If you suspect your goat is suffering from heat stress then you should call your vet for advice as soon as possible. In the meantime you should move your goat to a cooler spot and keep him or her quiet. Apply cool (not cold) water by hose or damp, cool towels. Immerse your goat in a cool tub of water for short periods if it can sit up - you want to lower the temperature gradually to avoid hypothermia and shock.

Serious complications can develop from heat stress - brain swelling, kidney failure, convulsions, shock or, in serious cases, death.

Emergency care -
Heat stroke causes incredible damage. Affected animals will first show excitation, followed by loss of balance and seizures, as the blood vessels in the brain engorge. A coma will follow. Heart failure is common and many other changes in body organs occur. The animal is at grave risk.

Emergency first aid is vital and you will need to get to a vet quickly. While you are contacting your vet, cool the animal by placing it in a room temperature (not iced) water bath or by hosing it. Place the wet animal in front of the fan and apply ice packs to its head and chest.

Older and younger goats are most susceptable.

Goat Headlines

What's in the News About Goats?

Just when you think something is a great idea and there you are wanting to give The Gift of Goat to a family who needs it- NOT necessarily if you are buying from a Beneficiary Gift Scheme such as "Oxfam Unwrapped"!

Apparently the buyer who thinks they are buying a goat for a family who needs it may not get a goat sent at all- it is up to the discretion of the Oxfam Unwrapped Co to decide what your money will be spent on.. sort of like going to a bridal boutique to buy a tea set for a bridal gift and instead, the shop decides to send a vacuum cleaner - because they felt this would be a more appropriate gift.
Bad Advertising, Bad Idea and Bad Mis-Representation to well meaning donors.

BOYCOTT OXFAM UNWRAPPED

Oxfam thinks it's a cute idea to send a Goat Wedding Gift
And it would be IF the goat was ACTUALLY sent instead of Oxfam deciding For YOU not to send a goat at all.

The Guardian Unlimited has a complete story on this Mis representation.

As for me? I would NOT use Oxfam to send a charitable gift - When I pay for something I pay for the something I ordered, not to have my money spent as someone else sees fit. Doesn't sound to me like a company that I would trust my hard earned money and my best efforts to send something I feel is important.

Jack Kukoda Show me Your Goats!

Some things are just too cool!

I'm not even sure how I found Jack- He had a request to Show me Your Goats! So I did.
I'm not sure who got more of a kick from it all-

Jack writes:

"One day last week, I was pressed for time and couldn't think of anything to write for the site, so I posted some pictures of my friend Clark's goats. I also asked people to send me pictures of their goats, if they had any, with the promise that I would put them on my website. I didn't really think anybody would, aside from my friend Abby who sent me a Powerpoint goat, which was awesome, thank you very much.

Then, around 1am on Monday night, I got an email from someone who goes by the name "Goatlady" that made my freaking week."

Goats Die Needlessly in CA Bay Area

Hundreds of goats die in Marin accident

SAN RAFAEL - More than 240 goats belonging to an Orinda business died Friday morning - mostly by suffocation - when a truck carrying them tipped over in San Rafael's Canal area.
Onlookers reacted with horror as officials piled hundreds of the dead animals on the roadside while digging through the wreckage of the overturned vehicle for more than an hour. The dead animals filled a Dumpster.
The Goats R Us truck taking 400 of the animals to a brush grazing job at the Golden Gate Seminary in Mill Valley may have been going too fast as it tipped over while making a left turn onto Kerner Boulevard, said San Rafael police Sgt. Mike Vergara.
The driver, Pittsburg resident Ed Gibson, said he could feel a tire give out and said he thought the animals may have shifted to one side as he made his turn.
The Marin Humane Society, San Rafael Police Department and San Rafael Fire Department responded to the 8:45 a.m. accident to save as many of the remaining goats as possible.
About 20 were found grazing in the nearby neighborhood and were rounded up within a couple hours. Read More: http://www.insidebayarea.com/dailyreview/localnews/ci_6315777

A visibly shaken Marin Humane Society Sgt. Michelle Rogers said 243 dead goats were pulled from the wreckage. Aside from two injured goats taken to the Marin Humane Society shelter, the remaining live goats were sent along to the seminary.

A man was taken to Marin General Hospital with minor head injuries suffered when he tried to prevent goats from escaping the truck. The 32-foot vehicle was moving the animals from Milpitas when the driver turned off to get a cup of coffee, according to San Rafael police..

Autumn is on the Horizon

Time to Plan for next year's kids

If you already have not done so, It's time to separate the bucks and does.. if not - you chance winter kiddings and possible unplanned pregnancies.

As the night temperatues drop, does begin to come into season- maybe just one or two early starters now, but look for your does to begin heat cycles every 21 days from now until late Feb.

The bucks will be more than happy to respond- and most activity will take place while you are sleeping.. so if you think "Billy" is being unresponsive to the does- HA! think again.

Separate them into different pens with strong fencing, make sure all have shelter. Make sure the fencing is not open enough for a doe to back up against to be bred and Yes it DOES happen!

To noobie goat owners.. Brace Yourself!
The bucks will be vocal, fragrant and active for the next few months. Bucks will raise a lip and holler.. the lip raising is called the Flehmen Response, they do this to get a better sniff at who is in season and who is not.
Our "Buckin' Around" GoaTee shows this in great style! Great Tee for the Manly Man in your life!
