Why I love Bollywood
Explains why I (an American) like these Hindi films produced in Mumbia, India
Bollywood movies are something like American musicals from the 50s and before. These films (most of which are epics) can be three or more hours long and contain many colorful song and dance routines, dizzying plot twists, and very beautiful actresses. Many scenes appear only to be there to facilitate a dancing scene with a song lip-synched by the actors.These films are colorful - both literally and figuratively. Bollywood movies are a visual feast - with scenery and attire one does not see in Western films. The story will veer from the main plot often, and no detail seems to be left out.
Some story lines are more contemporary, and the attire and plot are more Western. But the song, dance, and plot twists remain.
Americans without an interest in arts and culture may not be interested in this type of movie. Bollywood films are long and do not follow the conventional Hollywood movie format.
For those of us who like the arts and have an appreciation of color and design, these movies are wonderful escapes.
