Cake for Those who Hate to Bake

I love cake, but don't like baking

If you don't love baking, in fact if you would go as far as to say that you hate baking, then you are in the right place.

I don't like baking, and I've somehow made it to this point in life with very little baking. I made the expected birthday cakes when raising my children, and have eaten my share of delicious cake, but am always looking for ways out of baking cake.

Lets take a sometimes serious, sometimes humorous, but always helpful look at ways to have your cake and eat it too without necessarily baking.

An easier alternative - Learn How to Bake a Cake in a Mug in the Microwave - 101 Mug Cake Recipes

This actually sounds fun!

This is something even I might enjoy doing. I found a sample recipe from the cookbook shown below at the microwavemugcakes.com website.

Blueberry Muffin Microwave Mug Cake

INGREDIENTS:

1 egg
2 tablespoons mixed blueberry yogurt (with the fruit stirred in)
1 tablespoon oil
1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/8 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
4 tablespoons light brown sugar
2 tablespoons instant vanilla
pudding powder (not prepared)
4 tablespoons all-purpose flour

Directions:

Prepare mug by coating the inside lightly with cooking spray. Mix the ingredients in a small bowl. Beat egg first with a spoon and mix in other liquid ingredients. Then add dry ingredients and mix until you've removed all the lumps.

Pour the batter into the mug (do not fill more than halfway) and smooth the top with a spoon. Thump mug firmly on the tabletop six times to remove excess air bubbles. Place mug on top of a microwavable small plate or saucer.

Bake for 3 - 4 minutes. Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick in the middle of the microwave mug cake and removing the toothpick. If the toothpick is dry, the MMC is done. Wait 2 minutes, then run a butter knife along the inside of the mug, and tip the cake into plate. Position the mug cake so that the slightly rounded top is on top. Your microwave mug cake will now look like a slightly overgrown muffin.

Tasty Tips:

Frost the whole Blueberry Muffin Microwave Mug Cake with blueberry pie filling, blueberry jelly, or the rest of the blueberry yogurt, or use you own creative ideas to make your mug baked cake tasty.

Cake - From Scratch, Mix or Bakery

What is your favorite approach?

Do you bake from scratch, mix or buy from the bakery?

Loading

I bake from Scratch or with Cake Mix

Pukeko says:

We do nearly everything from scratch

BrandyT says:

I'm really half and half. Some times I like to bake, others I just want to buy. I guess it depends on my mood.

sandyspider says:

Though I have bought from a bakery. The majority of the time I have baked from scratch. Even without a cake mix. I love to bake!

purplelady says:

I usually buy a mix and then put some of my own ingredients in from scratch. Buying from a bakery is way too expensive for a frugal gal. So I like to do a mix and scratch.

I buy my cake from the bakery

Alfiesgirl says:

If it's a birthday cake I secretly buy a shop bought cake and then spend the twilight hours decorating it and then comes the best part...I then palm it off as all my own work when really i can only accredit the decoration hehe...works every time and everyone thinx I bake great cakes when truth be known I cannot bake for love nor money really.

bdkz says:

I buy too! Sam's Club has the best cakes in our town.

happynutritionist says:

As you might have guessed, definitely the bakery or bakers section of the supermarket or from a source online...and I try to find healthy cakes if I can. When I want to indulge, my absolute favorite thing is chocolate brownies, that's as close to cake as I will bake if I do bake them.

Cheat - Buy a Cake Online or at the supermarket or bakery

My favorite approach!

Who needs to go to all the trouble baking when you can get your cake online and have it delivered to your door or buy it at the store. This is a dream for those of us who hate to bake.

Most of the time I love baking, but there are times where I don't feel like doing it. Great recipe! My grandma has a similar recipe that she uses all the time.

Claudia, you can come to our home and have fresh baked goods anytime you want. We bake nearly everyday, and buy huge bags of 25 kg of flour at a time (really). And as hard as it for me to imagine not baking - I bet you will struggle with this - we don't have a microwave.
  • happynutritionist Feb 24, 2010 @ 8:06 am | delete
I see you are a busy Mom, wonderful that your children will grow up knowing how to bake...no microwave, yes, have to admit I'd be lost without that, esp. to warm things and thaw things, some say it alters foods if you use it to cook and makes it less nutritious?
  • BrandyT Feb 23, 2010 @ 9:34 pm | delete
When I do bake a cake, it comes from a box. I can not make anything from scratch.
  • happynutritionist Feb 23, 2010 @ 11:51 pm | delete
I haven't baked from a box in a few years, only bake brownies from a box...and that's pretty rare because they do a good job in the bakery section of my supermarket:-) Thanks for the visit! ~claudia
  • Alfiesgirl Feb 23, 2010 @ 7:33 pm | delete
This is a really great lens...I don't mind baking but unfortunately baking does mind me...i am ridiculously bad at it...but i'm a great baking cheat so no-one actually knows that i cannot bake to save my life hehe
  • happynutritionist Feb 23, 2010 @ 11:50 pm | delete
