It seems like when a cake decorator stresses out over a big order or a child's special request for an unusual birthday cake, the creative side of the brain decides to take a break.

Sit down at your computer, go to Google.com) and then click on Google Images. Then search for cakes by type, theme or occasion, and you'll find thousands of cake decorating ideas. You can also find great cake decorating ideas at the better forums and membership sites.

After smoothing the buttercream icing on your cake with a spatula (an offset works best), allow it to form a crust. This will take about 15 minutes. Be sure to use a crusting form of buttercream!

Once the icing's dry on top, place a plain paper towel lightly on the area you want to smooth. Then using the palm of your hand, gently rub the paper towel.

Your hand's warmth (unless you just had your hands on cold water) will soften the icing while the gentle movement will smooth out those bumps and ridges.
