Cake and Cookie Decorating: An Addiction and Way of Life

Cake and cookie decorating is in my blood. My great-grandma baked. My grandma bakes. My mom bakes. And not surprisingly: so do I!

But baking is one thing. Decorating what you've baked, is a true art form.

Without decoration, all you've got is some flour, a couple eggs, a little baking soda, some sugar, the occasional chocolate.

But DECORATED, baked goods become masterpieces.

There's always a good occasion right around the corner that needs a beautiful, decorated cake (or cookies!)

Here's why:

1) They're yummy.

While that should be reason enough already, I'll give you some.

2) They bring people together. Some of the best conversations happen when people are sitting around the table, enjoying the food and each others company.

3) It makes you look super talented. A sense of pride comes from bringing the most fabulous looking dessert to a party/school function/get-together.

4) It makes whoever you make it for feel extra special. The fact that you went through all of the trouble to make such a beautiful work of art is enough to make anyone feel good!

Here are just some examples.

Once you start your cake and cookie decorating though, you'll be able to make you own list for why it's an addiction and fulfilling hobby.

Cake and Cookie Decorating Made Easy

If you're looking to get started on learning the art that is cake and cookie decorating, I suggest these 3 books.

presentcake

They are made to give you a step by step guide that is easy to follow. These books are great for giving the cake and cookie decorating beginner a taste (no pun intended) of what works when decorating and what doesn't.

One of the best features of these books are the informative pictures. As we all know, sometimes written directions are more confusing than they are helpful!

Best of all, you don't have to buy all these at the same time. You can just give at try with the first one (at $5, you really don't have much to lose) and see where that takes you!

The Long-Term Commitment Kit

I really like the cake and cookie decorating ideas from the Wilton kits/books. I've gotten some of the best compliments from ideas that I got from their books.

There are two things that I most recommend from Wilton:

1) 53 piece supplies set (comes with small book)

2) Cake Decorating Book

With 53 different parts that help you craft the perfect cake, the supplies kit is a baker's must-have!

This set also comes with a book that has clear and easy-to-follow recipes.

If you're still wanting more recipes though, the Decorating Cakes book is devoted solely to beautiful cake decorating ideas.

Something to keep in mind: The equipment set is not really for beginners. It was made with the well-seasoned cake decorator in mind.

Extra Tip: Does not contain a dropper. It will make your life much easier to invest in one.

By far the most equipment for your money and is very good quality!

Quick Fixes: Cookies!

When you need a dessert pronto, there's often not enough time to bake a cake AND decorate it. You're good but you're not THAT good right?

What's a baker to do?

Cookies, That's what!

They're fast, easy, and totally "decoratable."

Here's one of my favorite books for when I need my cookie fix.

This book has really great ideas for designs. Again, the pictures are helpful and the instructions are very straightforward.

This book is great for both the beginner and the pro.

One of My Favorite Cake Decorating Blogs

Works for cookies too!

I absolutely adore this blog.

I wish I had made it myself!

She has the most creative, well thought out ideas that look like they are totally "doable" and can be varied to fit the occasion.

She gives great tips for making delicious and high quality cakes that aren't too complicated and can be followed easily by anyone.

She shows wonderful pictures and also includes things she would have changed for making the cake next time. This way you get several versions and can pick the one that works best for you.

I finally broke down and bought this amazing 101 piece cake decorating set.

I really can do and make ANYTHING I want now very easily.

It has cut down on my cake decorating time in over half!

This also make cookie decorating incredibly simple since you can crank out the designs on those with very little effort.

It is also very high quality since I've had mine for a while and nothing has broken in it at all and works just like it did when it was new.

Make The Most Delicious Cream

This kind of cream can be used on pretty much any cake and tastes good with a variety of ingredients.

It's also incredibly easy to make and it usually turns out very well (even if you don't know what you're doing the first time!).

It's one of those recipes that you should have handy at all time since you can whip it up super fast when you need to and it's so diverse.

What to Wear While Baking

Cake decorating is addicting.

It's kind of like Squidoo, you're always excited about what you'll be able to create next!

It's also like Squidoo is that you get to be proud and show off what you make.

My family got me both of these shirts since they know I love it so much...and they love it because they get cake!

I took the Wilton Cake decorating Classes myself with two of my daughters when they where about 8 and 10. My favorite cakes that I made where for baby showers. It was a stress reliever but the clean up killed me. He He He, cuz I would make a mess. That was part of the Fun! Fondant is a blast to decorate with. If you need some pans let me know. I have a lot I have to get rid of.... Maybe I should make a lense on them....
