Cake Decorating for Kids of All Ages

With all of the tvs and dvds and websites and video games out there, it's sometimes hard to find good, quality activities to do with kids that don't involve a screen!

Cake decorating for kids can be a great activity to do as a family or an activity for a group of kids (if you have that kind of energy!)

It can also be a great activity for birthday parties or other holidays because kids can choose the cake that they would like to have. My sister had a total blast with her princess cake!

How to Start a Cake Decorating Business

Where I learned My Cake Decorating Skills

This is one of my favorite investments that I've made when it comes to cake decorating for kids.

It cost me just a couple of dollars but has given me SO much information for making really good looking, high quality cakes.

People ask me all the time where I got my cakes and I'm always really excited to tell them that I was able to create it by myself!

Truthfully, this website has taught me pretty much everything I know about cake decorating and I've supplemented it with several other books that I've also shown on this lens. But this has been my primary resource.

The decoration ideas range a wide levels of difficulty so you can pick what you have the time/skill for and gradually work your way up.

I highly recommend this resource because it's more than worth the money you'll pay for it.

The World's Easiest to Make Icing

I promise!

This icing is best for drizzling since it ends up pretty "gooey." You should get about half a cup of it when you're all done!

What you'll need:

1) 1 cup powdered sugar

2) roughly 1 tablespoon milk (plus more towards the end)

3) 1/4 tsp. vanilla

Combine all the ingredients.

Keep adding milk until you can drizzle it. If you want it thicker though, you can stop!

The Cake Corner Blog

This blog has so many ideas for cake decorating with kids that it'll be a challenge for you to try them all!

The Most Amazing Recipes

This is one of the most fun books for recipes I've ever seen. I only wish it was longer! Or that they would come out with more books!

The cakes always turn out looking amazing because of the vibrant colors and creative designs.

One of the handiest things you'll learn is how to make different types of icing.

These recipes are great for kid's birthday parties or other holidays. The downside is that not all of these recipes are the easiest things to make WITH kids. There are some choices that you might want to just make on your own.

Instructional Videos

These videos are full of great ideas for cake decorations.

They can be modified to be extra kid friendly, especially if you invest in some handy cake decorating tools that kids can use too.

Be creative. It's easy to take an idea and to modify it for you needs.

Cake Decorating for Kids: The Easy Way

If you're interested in getting involved with cake decorating for kids but don't feel like you're artistically able to do it, do not fear.

This book has very easy to follow text and pictures that make the recipes very clear.

The recipes are very clever in that they don't take a lot of work but end up looking great.

There are also cake decorating ideas that work great for both boys and girls so you'll have your pick to choose from.

There are, however, only 20 cake ideas, but I think that they are great ones and so are well worth the money.

My Favorite Kitchen Stuff

I love the Martha Stewart Collection for the kitchen.

Everything is colored so brightly and also comes in great seasonal styles.

It's also great quality. I've had the same stuff for several years and it still looks great.

On her website, she has a section for Cooking With Kids that is filled with great ideas.

I also really enjoy the cake decorating sets because they come with everything and they are so easy to use and to create very intricate designs.

Hi Alex! This is absolutely WONDERFUL! I think a terrific idea for kids would be to whip up a primary bowl of buttercream, then make smaller, separate bowls w/ different colors - almost like when kids are decorating Easter eggs. Then, instead of having them try to handle the pastry bags and tips (although, you can - just to let them handle the goop and have fun!). Then, using popsicle sticks they can slop it on top of cupcakes, etc. This can be a really fun activity for a birthday party - and of course they get to eat the goods after! Then, as party favors, each kid could get one of the little kids chef hat or other appropriate kiddie cooking item to take home. I think it would be loads of fun (you might even be able to get another parent to help. After all... where there's chocolate and sweets involved... hummm?) :) Hugs, Kath
(I just started a blog on this too! Learn How To Decorate a Cake and need to get a lens up on this as well. I'll be happy to link to you if you'd like!

This is an excellent little lens - it should be read by all parents. It's a long time since I've seen these simple family activities encouraged - as opposed to plonking your kids in front of a screen
