Famous country singer Cal Smith is one of the best guitar players. He was one of those few lucky singers whose songs reached and topped as the number one spot in the national charts. Cal Smith's music has a sentimental feel his most successful hits include "It's Time to Pay the Fiddler", "Country Bumpkin", "The Lord Knows I'm Drinking", and "I've Found Someone of My Own". In 1974 he was awarded Best Singer of Year by both "Academy of Country Music", and "Country Music Association"

Early Life

Cal Smith was born on 7th April 1932. Cal belongs to Gans Oklahoma. His birth name was "Calvin Grant Shofner". From a very young age Cal showed great interest in learning music. His favorite instrument was guitar and he used to play it magnificently. After few years Cal Smith's family moved to Oakland, California. He spent most of his young life at this place. It's exciting to know that he started to play guitar and his began music in San Francisco, when he was only 16.

Struggle Years

Cal Smith had to struggle for more then ten years in beginning of his career. He worked in small jobs like driving, TV acting, bronco busting and two years in Army to meet the expenses. He still loved music, and he kept on working on small gigs and places. Till in early 1960, when he got his initial breakthrough smash hit song.

"Texas Troubadours"

Coming back from Army Cal started to play in a small band. It was country music star Ernest Tubb, who spotted his talent. He gave Cal Smith a chance to work as a lead guitarist in his band "Texas Troubadours". In most of 1960s, he could be heard playing guitar for the band.

"Tear Stained Pillow" and "I'll just go Home"

This song was the initial song that gave Cal Smith recognition and much needed breakthrough. Now people started to recognize him. He released another solo with Kapp Records, naming "I'll Just Go Home". The next single "The Only Thing I Want" brought him fame and stardom as it hit the billboard charts.

"Drinking Champagne"

Cal Smith left the band, and started to work on his own solo album. It was in 1969, he released his first solo album. The title song become over night success and instantly reached to number 40 in the country charts.

"I've found someone of My Own"

Till today, this is considered one of most successful work by Cal Smith. This album was released with Decca Records, and it soared in the charts. With popularity came the success and he was a credible artist now. Most of the big celebrity names of music industry preferred working with him.

"The Lord Knows I'm Drinking"

In 1973, this album released and went on to become the number one in the country charts. Decca Records get absorbed to MCA Records and they started to work on another hit released in 1973, "It's Time to Pay the Fiddler" that also smashed and become number one song.

In 1974 another hit came his way with title "Country Bumpkin". This was the album that provided him award. Cal Smith's musical contributions were acknowledged by his "Song of the Year" award from both prestigious institutions of "Academy of Country Music" and "Country Music Association".

The next hits came in 1974 with "I Just Came Home to Count the Memories" that was also released by MCA Records. The string of success continued, with "Between Lust and Watching TV", "She Talked A Lot about Texas" and "The Rise and fall of the Roman Empire"

"Stories of Life by Cal Smith"

This is the one of last album made by Cal Smith. It was released in 1986. The final hit that Cal produced is "King Lear" being released by the "Step One Records".

Branson Years

Since 1986 Cal Smith took semi retirement and made only rare music appearances. But his love for the country music remained very intense and deep rooted. He chooses the country music town of Branson Mo to make his home. He lives there these days with his wife, Darlene. He also like meeting his friends and fans.
