Calabash, North Carolina
Ranked #4,666 in Travel & Places, #137,403 overall
"Seafood Capital of the World"
Bordering the Calabash River and the South Carolina State line, Calabash is a quiet, somewhat secluded town, that is just a few minutes drive to the hustle and bustle of the Grand Strand and the activity of the Myrtle Beach area, yet it remains a world apart. With a population of just under 1000, the town is full of friendly folks and some areas will remind you of days long ago, when you knew your neighbors and they knew you.
A bit of Calabash History
Recorded history shows that the land in the Calabash area was a province of the Lords Proprietors. It was included in a grant of 48,000 acres to Proprietor Landgrave Thomas Smith in May, 1691. Smith conveyed hundreds of acres in and around Calabash to one of the early known settlers, the Indian trader, William Waites. The first two families living in the area were Samuel Thomas and Jessie Wilson families. These two families were the roots of the Calabash early settlement. The first seafood establishment opened around 1935.
Shopping in Calabash
Besides being known for its seafood and restaurants, there are specialty shops for those who enjoy shopping. One of my favorite shopping destinations in town is Callahan's Nautical Gifts and St. Nick's Nacks. Located on the corner of Hwy 179 and River Road just up the street from the waterfront. It boasts a huge variety of nautical style gifts, jewelry, t-shirts, fudge, toys and novelty items, as well as one of the largest Christmas themed shops in the area. The combined departments of Callahan's boasts 35,000 square feet of shopping - so plan to spend some time browsing and enjoying this landmark shop in Calabash. Only in a small town can you find this kind of historic flavor...

Golfing in Calabash
Yet another attraction to the Calabash area is the world class golf courses located within a few minutes in any direction. There are six courses located within the towns limits, nine if you count the multiple courses offered at some of the resorts. They include: Brunswick Plantation with its 3 courses, Carolina Shores Golf Course, The Meadowlands Golf Club, The Pearl Golf Links, Farmstead Golf Links and Crow Creek Golf Club. The greens don't stop in Calabash though, there are at least two dozen more courses readily available year round within twenty miles of Calabash in neighboring North Carolina towns as well as the Grand Strand and Myrtle Beach areas of South Carolina.
If mini golf is more your speed, there is also Calabash also offers the Tropical Adventure Mini Golf located right on Hwy 179 in the heart of the town.

Calabash Shrimp Recipe

- Serves: 4
- Prep Time: 10 mins
- Total Time: 20 mins
One of the things that made Calabash, NC famous is the wonderful seafood served up in its local restaurants. This recipe for Calabash Shrimp is best when the shrimp is fresh, not frozen and the oil is fresh and hot. Be sure to let us know how you like it if you happen to try it. (recipe is from food.com)
Ingredients
- 16 oz Fresh Shrimp
- 1 Egg
- 2 tbsp. flour
- 3/4 cup cornmeal
- 1 tsp. cornstarch
- salt & Pepper to taste
- 1 cup cooking oil
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
Instructions
Combine the flour and cornmeal with a bit of salt and pepper and place on a plate. Place the breadcrumbs on another plate.
Scramble the egg with a little water (about 2 teaspoons); this makes the egg lighter.
Rinse your shrimp and pat dry.
Dip your shrimp in egg, then cornmeal mix, then egg mix and lastly bread crumbs.
Fry until light golden brown.
Serve with cocktail or tartar sauce. Always offer hot sauce as well.
Cracker Meal - Fried Oysters

- Serves: 4
This recipe for another Calabash, NC style favorite is from epicurean.com. The coating is light, crisp, and lets the oysters really shine. It's not exactly, but very similar to, the way the restaurants in Calabash, North Carolina, the self-proclaimed seafood capital of the world, fry oysters.
Ingredients
- 32 medium oysters
- shucked and liquor reserved
- Peanut oil for frying
- 1 1/2 cups cracker meal
- 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
- Kosher salt
Instructions
1. Place the oysters in a bowl in their liquor and refrigerate them until ready to fry. In a deep saucepan or pot, heat the oil until it registers 350 degrees F on a deep-fat thermometer.
2. Mix the cracker meal and flour in a large shallow dish. A baking dish works well.
3. Drain the oysters, and drop them into the coating one by one, keeping them separated. Coat each oyster well, shaking off the excess cracker meal and flour mixture. Drop each oyster gently into the hot oil and fry until it is golden brown, 3 to 4 minutes. It is important not to overfry them. Drain them on paper towels and sprinkle with kosher salt.

- Welcome to the SC Group. I've been to Calabash a couple of times. We stayed at a friend's beach house out at Sunset Beach. Of course, we had to eat at the restaurants to make the visit official. We stopped in at St. Nick Nacks. What an awesome place!

- Hi Michey, Calabash and the entire Carolina coast is a wonderful pit stop when travelling the Eastern seaboard. I came from NY and my Mom lives in Florida - we discovered this area because it was about halfway between the two - great break in driving and wonderful things to see and do.
