Where is Calabria?

Possibly the least trekked region in Italy, Calabria boasts majestic landscapes of rugged mountain terrain and never-ending baby blue skies. Surrounded on three sides by the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas, the Calabrian peninsula stretches to form the toe of the boot, and at it's narrowest point, is only 3.2 kilometers from the island of Sicily.

Calabria is divided into five provinces, each named for its capital city.

Catanzaro, the regional capital, is home to the ancient Greek town of Skylletion, the Sila Piccola mountains and the clean, uncrowded beaches at Pietregrande, Soverato and Caminia.

Cosenza is the largest of Calabria's provinces and houses the Sila Grande and Sila Greca mountains, a 700,000 year-old cave and some of the most stunning beaches in the Mediterranean, including Diamante, Scalea and Isola di Dino.

Crotone, once the mighty Magna Graecia settlement of Krotone, was the home base for the Greek mathematician, Pythagoras. Today, its land cultivates Calabria's finest wine, Ciro and features ancient Greek and Norman ruins at Capo Calonna and Le Castella.

Reggio Calabria is considered to be one of the first Italian cities and is known throughout the world for its famous Riace Bronzi statues. The Province of Reggio Calabria includes the mysterious Scilla coastline, Gerace, the best preserved Medieval village in Italy and Calabria's most impressive Byzantine structure at the Cattolica in Stilo.

Vibo Valentia is Calabria's youngest province and houses within its province some of Calabria's most well-known attractions-Tropea, famous for its plunging cliffs and turquoise waters and Pizzo Calabro, home of Tartufo di Pizzo gelato and the Chiesetta di Piedigrotta.

A Day in the Life of a Calabrian

or at least ... a wanna-be

According to Rick Steves, "If you like Italy as far south as Rome, go further south. It gets better. If Italy is getting on your nerves by the time you get to Rome, think twice about going further. Italy intensifies as you plunge deeper."

I have to say, Rick really hit it this time because that is absolutely the *best* way I've ever heard it summed up.

Calabria is intense.

It is authentic in every sense of the word.

It is real Italy .. for better or worse.

And that makes being an expat here in Calabria even that much more exciting. Or frustrating. Or intense.

CHILD OF WONDER

Child of Wonder is a poignant religious narrative set primarily in picturesque Calabria. It is a moving portrait of an abused child whose unfortunate circumstances of birth and odd appearance mark him as an object of ridicule and scorn by both his family and villagers. The story focuses on the tragedies and the religious experiences of young Lorenzo Malcini, whose prayerful life and enduring faith in the Blessed Mother both sustain him and transform him, take him beyond himself and his terrible struggle to experience self-acceptance, understanding, and love. Blended into the narrative are the fascinating folkways and beliefs of the region. Written in English by IA founder and director of The Italian American Press, Child of Wonder is available as a free e-book through www.italianamericanpress.com. In the past, the book has numbered between 400-800 downloads monthly.
