Northern California's Best Kept Secret

Nestled in the Sierra Foothills of Northern California about 170 miles east of San Francisco, Calaveras County was a bustling land of gold and silver mines in the late 1800's. Famous people like Mark Twain lived there and wrote about the area, bringing its name to the rest of the world. But when boom times went bust, the tiny towns nearly died, until vintners and wine growers took notice of the area's arid climate and rich red soil, which was perfect for growing wine grapes. Years later, these same towns are bustling with wine lovers and tourists from around the world, eager to sample the local wines and take in the rich local history.

My husband's parents own Holleman Vineyards in San Andreas, CA, and a local winery has even named one of their wines after my father-in-law, "Big John" Holleman.

Mark Twain lived in Calaveras County for a short time and wrote this short story in 1865. The City of Angels Camp, where the story takes place, continues to hold its annual frog jumping contest in his honor. ~BadMsM

I have to say we don't drink as much wine as we should!

We both grew up in "Wine Country" in the Finger Lakes Region of upstate New York. Love your lens!
